“We will have two contests: The Speech Evaluation and Humorous Speech
Contests. The first contest will be the Speech Evaluation Contest. When that
contest has concluded, we will have a 10 minute break. After the break, we will
conduct the Humorous Speech Contest.”
(Announce:)
“Contestants, timers, ballot counters, and sergeants at arms have all been briefed
prior to the beginning of this contest. Everyone is aware of the Toastmasters
International rules that govern this contest. No one should enter or leave the room
during the contestants’ presentations. You may do so if time permits during the
minute of silence between presentations. We would prefer that you not take
pictures, particularly with flash cameras, while the contestants are speaking. For
this contest, the speaking area has been determined to be: ___________________.

Shake hands with test speaker, be seated and listen to the speech. When
the speech is over, shake speaker’s hand. The test speaker returns to his or
her seat.

“We will now give our speech evaluation contestants five minutes to complete
their evaluations. Will the designated Sergeant-At-Arms please escort the
contestants out of the room and time five minutes for them beginning when they
are seated in the sequestered room? When that five minutes is over, please escort
our first contestant back to this room.”
Allow the Sergeant at Arms enough time to escort Speech Evaluation
contestants from room. After they have left, make the next announcement:

“Time Keepers, please time five minutes. While the evaluation contestants
complete their evaluations, we will get to know our Test Speaker. Please welcome
back to the stage _________________________________________________.”
Lead applause as test speaker returns to stage. Ask each question below.
Wait for reply before asking next question.

“Please be seated. We will now conduct the Humorous Speech Contest. If you used
your cellphone during the break, please ensure that it is now off or in silent mode.
Once the contest has begun, the Sergeant at Arms will secure the doors. The

Members of the audience are asked to refrain from leaving or entering the room
during the contest. Again, we would prefer that you not take pictures, particularly
