Zeitoun By Dave Eggers 10th Grade English: Dreams and Destinations Essential Questions: -How do natural disasters change a community? -What makes someone an insider? What makes someone an outsider? -How do American biographies (like Zeitoun’s) revise (or add to) American history? Overview: Zeitoun by Dave Eggers is a true story about Abdulrahman and Kathy Zeitoun, a couple from New Orleans. They go through a unique struggle during Hurricane Katrina after Abdulrahman is arrested while protecting his home from the flooding. As we read this book, we will explore the essential questions above, as well as discuss how this might link to some of our year-long essential questions like “What does it mean to be American?” Throughout the unit, we will continue to prepare for the MCAS and SAT through the regular coursework and the final long composition-style assessment. Homework Options: For EACH section of reading you have 3 options: 1.) Create a web of 10-15 thoughts to track your ideas (this should include at least 10 page numbers). 2.) Develop an open-response style question and answer it using details from the chapter and quotes with page numbers (150-200 words). 3.) Create an outline of the chapter (with pages numbers). You should have at least 10 parts to your outline.
