English 009H: “Portraits of the Artist.”
We will study a variety of works portraying artists in different cultures and
contexts and media. The syllabus will vary each year but may include: Scheherazade as
story-teller (Arabian Nights selections), Shakespeare (sonnets), Mozart (the movie
Amadeus; Academy Award for best picture, 1984), a filmed staging of Puccini's opera La
Bohème, Frida Kahlo's life and work, Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony awarding-winning
musical In the Heights (2008), along with Richard Power’s contemporary novel,
Generosity: An Enhancement (2009. We’ll also use selected background and critical
materials.
Open only to first-year students.
