comprehend fifth-grade informational and functional reading materials.
• Using expanded vocabulary to determine word meaning
(Vocabulary words: fiesta, harvest, capricious, propriety, revolution)
Activity: TTW introduce the words prior to reading the story. TTW have the
words written on the dry erase board. TTW ask the students what they know
about each word. TTW clarify the definitions verbally and by writing the definition
on the dry erase board. TTW read the first chapter and TSW snap twice when
they hear the vocabulary words.

(Vocab words: harvest pg6 , fiesta pg 6, revolution pg 12, capricious pg 13,
propriety pg 13)
Materials: Esperanza Rising; pencil; premade foldable
Activity: TSW write each of the vocabulary words on the front of the
premade foldable. TTW and TSW revisit the specific vocabulary words in
Esperanza Rising to gather context clues to assist in deciphering the vocab
words. TSW will use the inside of the foldable to write a brief definition of
the vocabulary word, a synonym that coincides with the word, and a
sentence using the vocabulary word. Upon completion TSW share the brief
definition, the synonym, and the sentences that they used.

Activity: TSW complete a Venn diagram to compare and contrast Mexico
and California. TSW use their text, a map, and the internet to complete the
diagram. TSW compare the geography, culture, and natural resources.

Materials: Word study journal w/ common prefix/suffix/root word list;
pencil; miscellaneous reading items
Activity: TSW use one of the reading sources at the table to find 5 words
that can be decoded. TSW separate the word according to prefix/suffix /
root word and write a brief definition in their word study journal. TS can use
the “cheat sheet” as a reference for the definition.

Materials: Class set of Esperanza Rising; pencils; paper; assign separate
scenes to each group; imagination
Activity:
TSW write their own Reader's Theater scripts based off of the novel
Esperanza's Rising. TSW be given a separate scene from the novel to
present in a Reader's Theater play. TSW go with their pre-determined
group to this center. TSW work together with their group to write a script.
TS script should include both dialogue, and descriptions of the setting,
characters and stage directions, as a script would include for any other
play. TS may use any of the characters involved in your section of the
novel, as well as a narrator or multiple narrators. After the group creates a
script, the group will perform the play for the other groups at the end of
the week.

beginning of the lesson by asking the students to
