• Access (Headings, Uniform Titles, References)
AACR2 1978 – scope of machine-readable
data files
Machine-readable data files
- require use of a machine (such as a computer) for processing
- examples: “files stored on magnetic tape, punched cards (with or without a
magnetic tape strip), aperture cards, punched paper tapes, disk packs, mark
senses cards, and optical character recognition font documents” (AARC2 1978
9.0A)
- embraces both data and programs used to process that data
AACR2 1978 – examples of Extent of File
1 data file
2 program files
1 object program
1 data file (1,613 logical records)
2 program file (300 statements each, COBOL)
1 object program (IBM 360/40)
AACR2 1978
9.7B15 Mode of Use
Specify if file cannot be used on facilities available to user of catalog
Example:
Mode of use: On-line video or teletype terminal or with a small
dedicated computer (e.g., PDP 8)
AACR2 1988 – “Computer Files”
• Direct access carriers versus remote access carriers
• Extent – number of physical units
•
•
•
•
computer cartridge
computer cassette
computer disk
computer reel
• File Characteristics – moved to different area of description
AACR2 1988
File characteristics:
computer data
computer program(s)
computer data and program(s)
add number of records, statements, etc.:
computer data (1 file : 350 records)
computer program (2150 statements)
computer data (2 files : 800, 1250 records) and programs (3 files : 7260, 3490, 5076 bytes)
AACR2 2001 – “Electronic Resources”
• GMD “computer file” changed to “electronic resources”
• Chapter 9 entirely replaced– Electronic Resources
• “Electronic resources often include components with characteristics found
in multiple classes of materials so there will frequently be a need to consult
other chapters. For example, in describing a serially-issued cartographic
electronic resource.”
• Still understood to be data, programs, or both
• Still treated in two ways: direct (local) vs. remote (networked)
[direct means a physical carrier to be inserted in a computerized device;
remote could mean stored on a hard disk as well as accessed by a network]
AACR2 2001 continued
• all remote access electronic resources considered “published”
• file characteristics area renamed to “Type and extent of resource area”
• electronic data; electronic program(s); electronic data and program(s)
• same additions (files, records, bytes)
• chief source of information changed from title screen to resource itself, and
removal of preference given to internal sources
• option for conventional terminology (“1 CD-ROM” instead of “1 computer
optical disk”)
• always give date viewed when describing remote access electronic
resources
AACR2 2002
• “Serials” replaced by “Continuing Resources” which was expanded to
include integrating resources (ongoing and finite) such as updating looseleafs and updating Web sites
• Type and extent of data abolished for electronic resources; added to Extent
or a note
• example: 1 CD-ROM (1 file : 240,000 bytes)
• example: 1 zip disk (96 mb)
• Optional extent for remote access electronic resource + other details
• example: 1 sound file : digital, mp3 file
• example: Web site
• example: 1 electronic text : HMTL file

Mode of Issuance
• Single unit
A single physical unit or logical unit (e.g., a PDF file mounted on the web)
• Multipart monograph
Resource issued in two or more parts (either simultaneously or successively). Has a
finite number of parts.
• Serial
Resource issued in successive parts (usually with numbering) with no predetermined
conclusion. Includes reproductions of serials.
• Integrating resource
Resource added to or changed by means of updates integrated into the whole (e.g., an
updating loose-leaf publication; a continuously updated website)

The March of the RDA Elements
Some preliminary points …
• Some elements are flagged as “core elements” – they are applied if “applicable and
readily ascertainable”
• Add to core elements if needed to identify the resource
• Other elements are added on the basis of agency policy or cataloguer judgment
• Library of Congress has added to its list of core elements
• In RDA, elements are organized by entity (manifestations and items, followed by works
and expressions), as well as by user task (identify, select, obtain)
• Some values for elements are from controlled vocabulary lists
• Some values for elements are transcribed from the resource
• Some values for elements are notes adding details or providing annotations on other
elements
Also …
• electronic resources are considered “published”

Related manifestations – different approaches
to electronic versions
• original vs reproduction
• single record approach
• provider neutral
Reproductions – two approaches
Library of Congress reconsidered cataloguing of reproductions…
• Facsimile theory – original first, data on reproduction in note (AACR1,
LC approach to microforms and expanded to electronic
reproductions)
• Edition theory – reproduction first, data on original in note (AACR2,
RDA, LC’s revised approach to reproductions with 775/776)

The Future – cataloguing electronic resources
Issues and challenges:
• MARC mappings for
new RDA-based fields
like 344, 346, 347
• co-existence of
different standards
• entities, attributes,
and relationships –
FRBR/FRAD/FRSAD as
guides for the future
• Linked Data, Bibframe,
other encoding
standards
