Warm-up:
With your group members, write down some ideas to answer the following
question:
 What does an effective PowerPoint presentation look like?
• Thesis statement: Lebron James is the best player in the NBA
• Lebron James averages 29 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists per game. (Fact)
• Lebron has taken a moribund 19-win franchise to a perennial NBA title contender. (Fact)
• Lebron James went to Akron St.Vincent St. Mary's High School (Not Evidence)
• My friend Tony says, "LeBron James is one bad mamma jamma." (Not Evidence; Tony is not
an authoritative source)
• Mark Stein of ESPN says, "James has become the best player in basketball, hands down."
(Quotable Comment)
• Lebron James rebounded the ball, dribbled from one end of the floor to another, and
dunked over two players while being fouled by the third. (clarifying example)
• Basketball aficionado, Trent Lapsodoo, calls James the best player since Wilt Chamberlain.
(Authoritative example)
• Why is it necessary to explain evidence?
• How does that look?
• Topic sentence: In the movie Finding Nemo by Pixar, Dory and the other
characters illustrate the importance of perseverance.
• What are some pieces of evidence you have to support this?
• How would you explain them?
Today is Tuesday, December 15th.
Warm-up:
Provide and EXPLAIN one piece of evidence for each claim below:
1. The theme of the Disney movie The Lion King is to take responsibility for your actions.
2. Ms. Traughber went to the University of Idaho.
3. The Hunger Games series teaches its readers to fight for what they believe in.
4. The Seahawks are one of the best teams in the NFC (National Football Conference).
5. Students are required to attend school regularly. (Hint: use your handbook!)

• You might hear topics or ideas that you don’t agree with.
• How should you react or respond?
• What if someone says something you want to know more about?
• Should cell phones be allowed in schools?
• Should students have to wear uniforms in school?
• Should unhealthy foods be served in school?

• Does technology make people less social?
• Should school start earlier/later?

Today is Friday, December 18th.
Warm-up
Explain why the evidence or explanation isn’t sufficient for each example.
1. Claim: Everyone hates being bullied.
Evidence: “Jennifer Lawrence was bullied by mean girls in school.”
Explanation: If someone as well known as Jennifer Lawrence can get bullied, it must be bad.
2. Claim: The theme of the book The Giver is that everyone should be allowed to choose their own lives.
Evidence: At the end, Jonas runs away from his home.
Explanation: This would allow Jonas to choose his own future.
3. Claim: Michael Jordan is the best player in NBA history.
Evidence: Larry Bird describes him this way: “There’s Michael Jordan, and then there is the rest of us.”
Others said, “God [is] disguised as Michael Jordan.”
Explanation: As you can see, Michael Jordan is described as being godlike in his abilities.
• Now you have evidence.
• Now you must explain that.
• Let’s practice!
• You have the rest of the class period to write out your speech.
• That means, WORD for WORD!
• Then, you can make notes!
• This is a good time to see what gaps you have!
