The Golgi apparatus looks like a stack of pancakes, and these stacks are called cisternae. Each cisterna is made up of a twolayer membrane surrounding a central liquid-filled area. There are usually four to eight stacks in a single Golgi complex, but in some organisms there can be as many as sixty. The Golgi apparatus is usually located near the nucleus of the cell. The function of the Golgi apparatus is to modify, sort, and package proteins and other materials from the endoplasmic reticulum for storage in the cell or secretion outside the cell. http://www.suite101.com/content/thegolgi-apparatus-a125802 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page http://media.web.britannica.com/ebmedia/52/116252-004-9615DB80.jpg http://www.nano.org.uk/news/may2008/1 368.jpg
