Emphasis of congregational worship, so a large building that many people could be in at once The Roman Basilica had already been created as a large meeting hall. Usually designed for political events, these buildings became models of Christian architecture. Lets in light Clerestory- Upward extension of the building. Transept- A lengthwise section perpendicular to the nave Narthex- The arm of the walkway directly in front of the church that serves as a porch ART1010- Intro to Art, Bryce Walker “Old St. Peter’s” Rome 320 CE 7 French baroque Constantine the Great Judging that the empire could be more securely ruled from the East, he ordered his architects and engineers to transform the ancient Greek colony of Byzantio, into a new capital city called Constantinople (now called Istanbul) He constructed a 30-foot tall statue on a Roman basilica to demonstrate his continuing presence. “Constantine the Great” 325-26 CE ART1010- Intro to Art, Bryce Walker 8 spanish baroque San Vitale uses a central plan that originated in the east, eventually would be used in the west. Central plan churches are most often square with a central dome (like Hagia Sophia), but San Vitale takes on an octagon shape. The interior is decorated in glittering mosaics of christian icons and empire royalty. “Plan of San Vitale” Ravenna, 527-547 CE ART1010- Intro to Art, Bryce Walker 9 spanish baroque Byzantium art moved away from the classical Greek and Roman styles. Like the artists of ancient Egypt, Byzantine artists strove to use subjects from the eternal and sacred world of the spirit. Icon- a picture of a sacred subject painted on a wooden panel. Around 1100 CE, the west and east Christianity were dramatically different.
