What should a Christian
church look like?
Emphasis
of congregational
worship, so a large building that
many people could be in at
once
The Roman Basilica had
already been created as a large
meeting hall. Usually designed
for political events, these
buildings became models of
Christian architecture.

Constantine the Great
Judging that the empire could be more
securely ruled from the East, he ordered his
architects and engineers to transform the
ancient Greek colony of Byzantio, into a new
capital city called Constantinople (now called
Istanbul)
He constructed a 30-foot tall statue on a
Roman basilica to demonstrate his
continuing presence.

San Vitale uses a central
plan that originated in the
east, eventually would be
used in the west.
Central plan churches are
most often square with a
central dome (like Hagia
Sophia), but San Vitale
takes on an octagon shape.
The interior is decorated in
glittering mosaics of
christian icons and empire
royalty.

Byzantium art moved away
from the classical Greek and
Roman styles.
Like the artists of ancient
Egypt, Byzantine artists strove
to use subjects from the
eternal and sacred world of
the spirit.
Icon- a picture of a sacred
subject painted on a wooden
panel.
Around 1100 CE, the west
and east Christianity were
dramatically different.

The 18th century
Time period between the defeat of
the western Roman empire (400
CE) and the beginning of the
Renaissance (1500 CE)
Complex and fascinating period
worthy of study. Europe was
formed and a distinctive Christian
culture flowered.
