The formula is: • pH = -log[H+] Or it may be rearranged to: • [H+] = 10-pH (10 to the power of -pH) • So, since pure water has pH = 7: • [H+]H2O = 1.0 x 10 -7 M Acid------Neutral-----Base [H+] [OH-] 0---------------7------------14 Example Calculations The concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution is 5.21 x 10-2 M. What is its pH? • pH = -log[H+] • = -log(5.21 x 10-2 M) • = 1.28 Calculate [H+] for a solution with a pH of 8.32. • [H+] = 10-pH • = 10-8.32 • = 4.8 x 10-9 M What about pOH? And the rest?
