Objectives
 Identify four common vaccine
misconceptions held by health care
professionals and patients
 Explain the background for these concerns
 Develop an educated plan
to address these issues

worth a pound of cure”

Misconception #1:
Egg allergy = No flu shot ever, ever, ever

pneumonia vaccines together

Zostavax and Pneumonia Vaccines
• Package inserts for Zostavax and Pneumovax 23
state: “consider administration of the two vaccines
separated by at least 4 weeks”
• Statement mandated by FDA, but not supported by
the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization
Practices (ACIP)
• Randomized controlled trial showed ↓ antibody
titers with concurrent administration; clinical
significance unknown

Misconception #3:
Too many vaccines at once overwhelm
the immune system

Separate IM vaccines by
at least 1 inch
Simultaneous Administration:
More than one vaccine given on the same day, at different
sites, and not combined in the same syringe
• ACIP: all needed vaccines should be
administered during the office visit
• No upper limit for the number of
vaccines that can be administered
•ACIP: vaccination should not be deferred
because multiple ones are needed

Misconception #4:
I have had shingles before, so I do not
need the shingles vaccine
Zoster Vaccine
• FDA approved: adults 50 and older
• ACIP recommended: adults 60 and older
•ACIP supports receiving the zoster vaccine
even with a past history of herpes zoster
• Screening for history of chickenpox infection
is not necessary
