(You need the capability to open Microsoft Office 2007 documents [.docx] or Adobe [.pdf]) Pastor’s Paragraphs July 2012 It is that time of year again: summertime! We hear that, and we think of lazy afternoons by the lake…tubing or canoe trips on the river…long car rides to the beach, to play in the sand and surf…good meals with families…long summer days…chasing lightning bugs in the backyard. Summer is full of fun and, hopefully, relaxation, with the perfect mix of sun and warmth to lull us into a sense of peace and contentment. Usually, this languid pace extends into other areas of our lives, if at all possible. This is especially true at church. We move into a casual worship mode, and notice that our friends may be gone for a Sunday or two because they are on vacation. Some of the church programs take the summer off, and others are just more relaxed. Summertime is a different sort of time in the church just as it is in our lives, and it’s tempting to think that God’s slowing down as much as we are. The thing is, though, he’s not! God is always at work – even when the season may not be the season in which we look for his work. Jesus said as much when he cursed the fig tree. It’s fault? That it didn’t bear fruit…even though it wasn’t the usual fruit-bearing season. (Matt. 21:18-19) God is always at work, and it is our task to be ready to help him in his harvest. This summer, we still have much that is going on at Grace Hills. In July, we are hosting Impact Virginia; how might you help us care for the youth that attend this mission camp? Will you help with the food, assist in the preparation of our church, attend the nightly worship, or pray each day for the work these teenagers do? We’ll also be having Vacation Bible School later in the month. Will you help with this opportunity to invest in the lives of our youngest generations, instilling in them the word of God? I pray that each of us will consider, even in this offseason, how we might be part of the work that God is doing. With God, the field never lies completely fallow; let’s not be surprised when he’s at work, but rather be part of all that God is doing. What does it mean to be a good neighbor? I could almost see the smile through the telephone line this week as a friend responded to a phone call from the Good Neighbor Center. The question was asked, “How did your exam go?” The person’s response was one of relief and joy. The excitement was contagious as we talked. How wonderful it is to share the good times in our lives. Being a good neighbor can be asking another how things are going. Another call was made to a shut-in. The lady was happy to hear about the Good Neighbor Center and appreciated the call. When asked if she needed anything, her first response was “no, I’m okay.” When asked if I might pick up some items from the grocery store, she said I could. Milk, bread, and chocolate cookies were requested. After closing the center that day, I dropped off the items to her house. She was gracious and appreciative. Being a good neighbor can be checking on those people we don’t see on a regular basis. Where will the work of the Good Neighbor Information and Help Center go and to whom will God lead us in service? We have only just begun. The center is open on Tuesdays from 4:00-6:00 PM and from 10:00 AM until noon on Saturdays. Feel free to email us at our new address which is goodneighborcenter@yahoo.com. The phone number is a local call to 664-2121. We are thankful for the work God is already doing. We will have an ongoing need for volunteers to staff the center. Keep us in your prayers. Drop by when you’re in town. Tell your friends about us. Share your ideas. We are seeking to do God’s work in our community as we build caring relationships. -A Good Neighbor Volunteer Printed: 4/17/2020 10:53 PM Grace Hills Baptist Church Newsletter July, 2012 Page 4 of 4 Vacation Bible School will be July 23rd - 27th from 9 a.m. till noon.
