EXHIBITS – COMING SOON Great Balls of Fire: Comets, Asteroids and Meteors October 1, 2015 through January 3, 2016 The Space Science Institute’s National Center for Interactive Learning, with funding from the National Science Foundation and NASA, has developed a national traveling exhibition program called Great Balls of Fire: Comets, Asteroids, and Meteors. While Asteroids and comets are popular subjects for movies like Armageddon and Deep Impact, they are also playing their own starring roles in NASA research. In 2001, NASA’s NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft dramatically landed on the asteroid Eros. In 2005, NASA’s Deep Impact’s probe collided with Tempel 1, exploring beneath the comet’s surface. In 2007, NASA launched the Dawn spacecraft to the Main Asteroid Belt. Great Balls of Fire explores the mysteries of these celestial objects. The threat of a catastrophic impact from an asteroid or comet is a staple of popular culture. If there was a dinosaur killer in Earth’s past, is there a human killer in our future? What are the chances and how do we assess the risks? For that matter, what are asteroids, comets, and meteorites, and where do they come from? These and many other questions are answered in Great Balls of Fire. • Climb into a “spaceship” and blast off to the asteroid belt and Jupiter on a mission to gather data about asteroids and comets. • Enjoy a display of art and artifacts that tell the story of comet observations throughout human history. • Learn the size of the average rock in a meteor shower event (it’s smaller than you think!). • See what would happen if asteroids or comets of various sizes hit your hometown. • Use a variety of tests (magnetism, color, density/relative weight) to determine if a rock is a meteorite (or a meteor-wrong). • Determine if clips from Hollywood films are Science Fact or Science Fiction. • Build your own solar system, including asteroid belts and comets Website: http://greatballsoffireexhibit.org/index.html Images: http://greatballsoffireexhibit.org/gallery_large1.html PERMANENT EXHIBITS EcoDiscovery Center Visitors can take a ride on the Everglades Airboat Adventure, experience hurricane force winds in the Storm Center, dig for fossils alongside a giant prehistoric megalodon, get up close to a confrontation between a saber-toothed cat and an Imperial mammoth, learn about protecting and conserving the Everglades and Florida’s natural resources, and follow the natural path water takes through Florida. Visitors can learn about Florida mammals while enjoying the playful antics of North American river otters in their two-story indoor/outdoor habitat. The second floor also features the Mangurian Foundation Lifelong Learning Center with four labs and the 100seat Keller Science Theater with comfortable seating and technical features to support lectures, exciting science demonstrations, and presentations by community experts. Did you know minerals are the building blocks of the entire universe? The iron in hematite, in spinach and in our blood’s hemoglobin is all the same --- just like the calcium in sea shells, in milk and in our bones are all the same. Did you know some rocks glow in the dark? See pyrite or fool’s gold, opal, copper, malachite, halite, quartz, azurite, and sulfur, just to name a few! You will even be able to touch real lava and make a “volcano” erupt to see how new rocks and land masses are formed! The specimens in this display were provided by the Carol Jacobs Mineral and Ammonite Collection from the Broward College Graves Museum Collection. SPECIAL EVENTS Meet Elmo at the Museum! SUMMER TIME MOONLIGHT SEA TURTLE WALKS Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 9 p.m. - 1 a.m. June 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25, 30, 2015 July 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 2015 The Museum of Discovery and Science invites the whole family to participate in an evening of sea turtle discovery this summer. Once again, the annual evening Turtle Walks will occur in June and July. Visitors will enjoy an entire evening of sea turtle exploration and identification while uncovering the natural history and myths of turtles. Nature permitting, participants will have a chance to watch a 300 pound Loggerhead sea turtle venture out of the ocean to lay her eggs. A female loggerhead sea turtle may travel thousands of miles to return to the beach where she hatched as a baby to lay her own eggs as an adult. At 9:00 p.m., the adventure begins at the Museum of Discovery and Science with an informative hands-on session about turtles (land, fresh water and salt water) with an expanded focus on sea turtles. Guests will also meet the Museum’s Ambassador Loggerhead sea turtle who is almost one year old. Once it reaches an appropriate size it will be released in the ocean. Museum staff will provide answers to questions about nesting, threats and conservation before proceeding to the beach. The adventure continues to Fort Lauderdale beach where Museum expert guides lead guests to the sea turtle’s nesting grounds to look for amazing sea turtles. We cannot guarantee a sea turtle will be spotted on every walk but when it does happen it is a natural wonder that no one will ever forget. Guests should be prepared to walk approximately one to two miles, and provide their own transportation and snacks. Participants must be 9 years of age or older. Advance reservations are required as space is limited. Please call 954.713.0930 to make reservations. Prices are $18 for members and $20 for non-members.
