By: Gracie What It Looks Like Most Butterflies are the size of dinner plates. Butterflies can have many different colors of body covering. Butterflies also have scales on their wings. Life Cycle In the spring they come back to Manitoba and find milkweed plants. They lay their eggs on the milk weed. 1st It is a tiny ridged egg no bigger than a head of a pin. 2nd the caterpillar begins to grow/ the egg changes color 1st yellow then grey then it turns dark grey. The caterpillar bites a hole in its shell then a new baby caterpillar is born! Once the eggs hatch the caterpillars eat the milkweed. They become poisonous, and they make their chrysalis. Then they change into a butterfly . They come out of the chrysalis as a butterfly. Then they dry their wings, and they are ready to fly. Food What they eat: They sip the nectar from flowers, They also eat milkweed. They usually sleep in a leaf in a tree or flowers. Habitat Monarch butterflies like to live in warm places. In the winter they fly to Mexico. Butterflies fly south for the winter. It takes 6 weeks for butterflies to migrate south they are usually 2 miles up in the air when they are flying south. Enemies/ Protection. Protection: Their enemies are: shrews, mice, and birds. Milkweed makes butterflies poisonous so birds don’t eat them. Special body part/How it they move.
