NORTH MECKLENBURG HIGH SCHOOL IB EXAM INSTRUCTIONS 2015

IN CASE OF EMERGENCIES: Please call Mrs. Regen’s cell phone number which is 704-661-4012 or call North’s front office at 980-343-3840 and the office will relay a message.

ARRIVE: 7:45 for morning exams and 12:45 for afternoon exams. We will have a check-in meeting before we enter the exam room. Check in with a friend at 7AM to help one another avoid being late. Lunch is on your own. You MUST be on time. There are no make-ups or rescheduled exams.

If you are registered for the exam, you are required to take it. If you are a “no-show,” your exam will be sent to CMS so that the district can arrange for you to reimburse them for the cost of the test, and you will be required to take a teacher-made final on the regular exam day.

HOW TO GET THERE: See reverse side. If you need transportation, we will be coordinating carpools which will leave from NMHS 30 minutes before check-in time. In the case of extenuating circumstances and you need a ride, see Mrs. Regen at least 2 days prior to the exam.

HOW TO BEHAVE/WHAT TO WEAR: NMHS Code of Conduct rules apply at all exam sites.

There should be no shouting, craziness, or loitering around the building. Remember, you will be in public buildings as a guest. Dress modestly and comfortably. A sweatshirt is always a good idea. DRIVE SLOWLY IN PARKING LOTS AND NEAR OUR EXAMS.

WHAT TO BRING: Black pens are mandatory, as are pencils and graphing calculators

for math, science exams (your calculator memory must be cleared). You may also bring highlighters, pencils, and colored pencils, but their use is restricted to certain exams. (Pencils

AND pens are required for science exams.) There are no pencil sharpeners at the testing sites, so be sure to bring either a mechanical pencil or pre-sharpened pencils. Extra batteries are a good idea. You must know your IB Candidate Number.

WHAT NOT TO BRING INTO THE EXAM ROOM:

 Cell phones or any other type of electronic device (other than calculators for math & science). We will have a ritual “cell phone power down” at the beginning of each exam session and you will have to check your phone in with the proctor.

 You may bring a water bottle, which must be on the floor by your seat, but food is not allowed in the exam room.

 Book bags, purses, pencil cases, notes, notebooks, textbooks are all either locked in your car or stashed at the back of the room with the proctor.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN YOU GET TO THE EXAM ROOM:

 We practice a silent entry into all exam rooms. Students are to remain completely silent except for communication with Mrs. Regen or the proctor as necessary. This rule is strictly enforced.

 You will be seated according to a seating chart. This seating chart will vary for each exam.

Your seat will be indicated by a preprinted blue cover sheet for the examination.

 You must use IB exam booklets and IB graph paper. This will all be provided.

 You will also be provided with “rough” (scratch) paper for each exam; this paper will be turned in with your exam. You may not use your own paper.

 When the examination begins, you will be given a test booklet. You will then be given 5 minutes to read through the exam without writing, highlighting or using a calculator.

 Once the reading time is over, you will begin the exam. Start and end times will be posted.

 The exam periods vary in duration. As a general rule, you are required to stay for the entire exam period, unless you are given a window for early dismissal. That will be posted on the board and is entirely at the Administrator’s discretion. Once you leave the exam room,

you may not return. If you rode with someone else, you will need to wait outside the examination room.

 You may use the restroom during the exam, but you will be escorted by a proctor, and you will not receive additional time on the examination.

 When you have finished the examination, you will fasten your cover sheet to your test paper using a string tag provided. There is a space on the cover sheet where you will write which sections or questions you answered (if you had to answer all of them, write “All”). You will also write the total number of pages attached near the bottom of the cover sheet.

SOME ADVICE FROM PREVIOUS YEARS:

 Outline/Plan all English, History and Psychology questions before writing any. It’s worth the time.

 Be familiar with science data and math information booklets. You will be provided with clean copies.

 Check to see that your calculator has good batteries in it.

 Attend as many review sessions as you can.

 Create study groups.

 Eat well and get enough sleep during the whole month of May.

 Be sure your handwriting is legible. If an examiner cannot read your exam, it will not be scored.

 Remember that you are still a North Meck student, which means that you are held to the expectations of CMS and the school.
