INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS
• Our state representative and state senator have
introduced legislation to enact a $9 per credit unit fee
(up to $108) that, if approved would start being
collected in Fall 2013 and, given the current enrollment,
would provide @ 360k per year.
• Intercollegiate athletics may begin as soon as fall 2014 if
the fee bill is approved and becomes law.
• As recommended in the white paper produced by the
TAMU-T Athletic Council, we will initially seek
membership for our intercollegiate athletics in NAIA.

INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS
• In May 2013, the university will bring in a consultant with
NAIA and intercollegiate athletics start-up experience
to work with the Athletic Council on the
recommendations made in its white paper and to
develop a plan for the initiation of intercollegiate
athletics.
• The consultant is Dr. Darin Wilson, founding Athletic
Director at Georgia Gwinnet College and NAIA
National Athletics Director of the Year in 2010-2011, and
he is scheduled to visit Texarkana on May 6 & 7.
• The Athletic Council is the university group charged with
making recommendations to the President about
intercollegiate athletics.

CLUB SPORTS
• In 2011, A&M-Texarkana initiated club sports as a means
of “jump-starting” intercollegiate athletics.
• Unlike traditional club sports, the university hired
coaches and provided funding for the clubs.
• Community supporters were told that if they raised
funds to cover this model of club sports that these sports
could continue.
• Community supporters have been very generous in their
support and raised the funds necessary to continue
funding for the fall semester. Thus, club sports will
continue in Fall 2013, assuming student interest.
• Coaches will be expected to work with returning team
members to recruit additional members from the
existing student body. Club sports report to the Interim
VP for Student Affairs.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES
• The university will actively engage in planning and
fundraising for athletic facilities on campus.
• The first facilities will be “dual use,” i.e., will serve the
initial needs of intercollegiate athletic programs while
also providing recreation facilities for students, and
possibly, the community.

support to athletic activities on campus, composed
primarily of community citizens who generously give of
their time and dollars.
• The organization’s liaison with the university is the
Assistant Vice President of University Advancement,
who works with its board to identify fundraising priorities
and needs.
