Ho Chi Minh Report by Alina Roberts Ho Chi Minh was a brave man who was the president of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, and was the prime minister of North Vietnam from 1945 to 1969. He was born as Nguyen Ai Quoc or Nguyen Sinh Cung. He took the name, Ho Chi Minh, from a beggar. When the old man died, his ID card was all that was left. Ho found that card and used as his own, so when he was arrested he used that as his name. Ho Chi Minh was born 1890, May 19 th in Kim Lien, Vietnam. He was a very intelligent man. Ho Chi Minh’s sister was working for the French Army. She took this opportunity to steal weapons that she hoped she would be able to use to drive the French out of Vietnam. She was caught and was sent to prison with a life-sentence. Ho Chi Minh’s dad decided to send him to a French School because he had wanted his son to learn French as he wanted to prepare his son for the coming struggle against the French. After school, Ho became a schoolteacher for a short time. After that he decided he wanted to become a sailor. This meant that he was able to travel to many different countries and places. He learnt that Vietnam was not the only country that was struggling against the French. Ho Chi Minh had then settled in Paris in 1917, there he read books by Karl Marx and became interested in in communism. In December, 1920 he joined the French Communist Party, he was one of the founder members of the Party. He had been inspired by the Russian Revolution like the rest of the French Communist Party members. Ho Chi Minh had a beard and a mustache; in most pictures of him you could see that he always wore either a white, beige or brown shirt. Ho Chi Minh was one of the founder members of the French Communist Party along with others; this makes him a leader of the Party. He wanted to go back to Vietnam. However, he was aware that if he returned he was in the danger of the French arresting him, so he then decided to go and live in China on the Vietnam Border. As the French were attacking Vietnam the French Army’s General had said: “You can kill 10 of my men for everyone I kill of yours, yet even at those odds you will lose and I will win”. In 1945, Ho Chi Minh had announced that the country would be divided into two, the northern half under the control of the Chinese and the southern half under the British. On May 7th 1954 Ho Chi Minh was announced to be the ruler of the northern half of Vietnam, and Ngo Dinh Diem would be the ruler of the southern half. Ho Chi Minh was a very intelligent man because he was successful in school and was smart enough to trick the French during the war. He was very nationalistic because he was willing to fight for Vietnamese Independence and he got people to elect him by showing them that he would keep his country safe and he proved this during the war. He was charismatic leader; he has a very high level of power and an emotional impact on people. Ho Chi Minh had made a change to Vietnam by combining Communism and Nationalism together for a ‘new world order’. A great success for him was the victory of the Vietnam War between the French. Everyone loved him and helped him keep the title of prime minister of North Vietnam. One of the key events was the Vietnam War. A great challenge for Ho Chi Minh was that he had been arrested before he had been announced as ruler of North Vietnam, this made people worry at first but then they realized that he would fight for his country’s safety and try to keep everyone safe. One of his big strengths was that he could get people to believe in him, trust him; he was a true risk-taker because he was not afraid to fight for his country. One of his weaknesses was that he wasn’t as open-minded as the past ruler of Vietnam. He was a very successful leader because he had been ruler of North Vietnam for 15 years, form the day he was announced ruler to the day he died. Many people love him and he was a very peaceful leader; many people loved him for that. “Ho Chi Minh was a great leader; he was kind to everyone and loved us like we loved him” Many people loved him like he was family to him, most people loved him, the French didn’t like him one bit. Soon after the war North Vietnam decided that they would rename Saigon to Ho Chi Minh/Ho Chi Minh City. “Love other human beings as you would love yourself” Ho Chi Minh once said. Ho Chi minh was a great man who many people loved. Many people still love him and visit the mausoleum which contains his body, this mausoleum is located in Hanoi Vietnam. This very man taught people to be kind, loving and fair. He was a willing to die or get arrested for his country. One of Ho Chi Minh’s quotes was: “I’ve never heard of any president being so close to his people.” Bibliography ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ "Biography of Ho Chi Minh." Biography of Ho Chi Minh. N.p., n.d.
