(4th or 5th edition) 2) 100 Case Studies in Pathophysiology by Harold J Bruyere 3) iClicker for in-class quizzes Examinations and iClicker Quizzes: There will be 3 regular exams and 1 comprehensive final exam. Regular exams will cover the material PRIOR to the exam. They will be given on the dates in the schedule below and last EXACTLY 55 minutes. Examinations serve two purposes. First, they will be a test of your knowledge and ability regarding the material covered in lecture. Second, they will teach you how to take multiple choice format examinations that challenge your mastery of the material. The reality of all professional schools is that standardized exams (GRE, MCAT) and licensure exams (Nursing, OT/PT, etc.) are always multiple choice format and generally have many difficult questions. My examinations are meant to prepare you for what is coming when you reach professional school. The Final Examination is comprehensive. It will have the same general format as the regular exams, except it will be ~ 125 questions and will cover material from the entire course. In-Class Quizzes: There will be daily iClicker quizzes (1 question). These will serve as a record of your attendance and as a chance for you to test your current knowledge. We will start each lecture with an iClicker quiz (1 minute per question, be on time, no late quizzes will be given!). You must have your iClicker, I will NOT accept answers written on small scraps of paper; thus if you forget your iclicker you forfeit all points for that lecture! Attendance and iClicker Points: There will be an attendance iclicker grade for each day of class, you must be present and click in during the iClicker question to receive this point. Thus, each day of class (besides exam days) you will have a maximum of 2 points. Case Study Assignments: There will be 4 assignments from the Case Studies Book. These will be in-class group assignments. Groups will be determined by your group in lab (4 students to each group). YOU MUST BE PRESENT IN CLASS FOR THE WHOLE CLASS IN ORDER TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THE ASSIGNMENT. Your group will turn in a 1 page report based on the questions in the case study. 1 PAGE IS THE MAXIMUM LENGTH! Due dates for Assignments are stated in the schedule at the end of this syllabus. Points will be deducted for late work. You must email your assignment to me (mcelroye@cofc.edu). Instead I offer extra credit for ADDIITONAL work 1) 20 points, Case Study: I am only assigning 4 out of 100 case studies in your book. For 30 extra credit points you can complete 1 additional case study. This is not a group effort (no plagiarism or copying of each others reports…I will notice!). You may work together BUT you must individually complete and turn in the Case Study for extra credit (one page, all questions answered). You may complete and turn these in at any time; I will accept extra credit case studies until December 8 at 11:59 PM (first day of final exam week). Supplemental Instruction (SI): Mike Weingarten will be your SI leader. SI hours will be announced by Mike in class. Mike will provide you with materials and learning strategies that will help you master course content. He is familiar with all of the exams and course material and should serve as an excellent resource to enhance your learning experience in BIOL201. SNAP students: Please bring SNAP form to me at least 1 WEEK prior to exams. The SNAP office will provide a testing space and oversee your examination. Academic Honesty: If I suspect you are cheating on an exam or case study I will report you to the Dean of Students and we will go through an Honor Board hearing. No questions, no exceptions.
