He held an ivory and gold figure of Victory in one hand and in the other, scepter inlaid with precious metals The sculptor Pheidias began work on statue in 440 BC,ad it was later destroyed by an earthquake. Alexandria The only Wonder that served a practical pupose; Safely guiding ships passing from the island, of Pharos to the harbor of Egypt’s ancient capital city, Alixandria. Its spectacular white marble-covered tower stood 40 stories high. A largemiror illuminated sunlight by day and fire by night –generating reflections so bright they could be seen miles away. This Wonder to disappear the Lighthouse’s peak was guarded by a statue of Poseidon. Legendholds that its famed mirrors revealed and destroyed approaching enemy ships. Ephesus Upon seeing its omate marble façade and 127 columns standing 60 feet high, visitors declared the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus the most beautiful structure on Earth. Built in 550 BC in honor of the Greek goddess of hunting, nature and fertility, the Temple vas located 31 miles south of what is now lamir (Smyrna)in Turkey. Surrounded y shimmering gold pillars and silver statuettes, he temple housed bronzestatues and many ancient works of art by the finest artists of the age Halicarnasus The 140 foot tall Mausoleums distinguish itself by featuring statues depicting people, horses, lions and other animals –rather than ancient Greek gods Located in bodrum in southwest Turrkey, the Mausoleum was the burial place of king Mausollos of Caria. Before his death, the king’s wife and sister, Artemisia, began the project wich was completed around 350 BC, three years after mausollos’ death. The Mausoleum stood for 16 centuries, until it was damaged by an earthquake. Dismantled in the early 15th century by the Knights of St. John of Malta, the stones were used to build a massive crusader castle, wich still stands today. Rhodes From its creation to destruction, the Colossus of Rhodes stood for only 56 years near the harbor of the Mediterranean island of Rhodes in Greece. After an earthquake damaged the Colossus in 226 BC, the statue lay in ruins for decades Constructed as asymbolm of unity and a celebration of victory against the Antigonids of Macedonia, the statue was built by the people of Rhodes in the image of the sun god, Helios. With a base of white marble, a skin of bronze and a hight of feet, its size and detail inspired many artists, including sculptor August Bartholdi who created the statue of Liberty.
