Temple
The Beginning
• In 1873, Henry passed the examinations to join the
civil service in India.
• In India he first became involved in matters related
to criminal identification and fingerprinting.
Henry Classification
System
• Published in the late
19th century
• Efficient method for
classifying fingerprints
of a large group of
subjects
• Organizes fingerprints
by physiological
characteristics
• System is based on the
appearance of whorls
o Must contain at least 2 deltas
o 4 types: plain, central pocket,
double loop, accidental
How It Works..
• All 10 fingers are paired (one in the numerator &
one in the denominator):
• Each pair of fingers is given a value if a whorl
pattern is found
o 1st: 16, 2nd: 8, 3rd: 4, 4th: 2, & 5th: 1
• No other pattern receives points
• In order for no fraction to end up with 0/0, we add 1
to the total.
Example
If a whorl was found only on the right index finger and
the right middle finger, what would be the final
fraction?
