Primary deviance is when an individual violates a social rule but is not labeled. Charles Manson violated a lot of social rules while living in the Spahn Ranch along with the rest of the Manson family. However, none of these acts of deviance were known to the public, therefore there was no label. Secondary deviance is the violation of social norms in which authorities label the individuals deviant crimes and they accept the label. When Charles Manson was 32 and was able to leave prison, he had asked if he could just stay there because he considered it his home, since he had spent more than half of his life in prison. A lot of criminals cannot accept the labels that are placed upon them. They deny the responsibility of committing the crime and injuring anyone. Charles Manson killed a lot of people. Especially in the Tate-LaBianca case. He denied ever killing anyone, he also denied ordering anyone to be killed. He actually stated “I have killed no one and I have ordered no one to be killed.” Books- The Manson File: The Myth and Reality of An Outlaw by Nikolas Schreak o Helter Skelter: The True Story of the Manson Murders by Vincent Bugliosi o The Family by Ed Sanders o Manson In His Own Words by Charles Manson o Documentaries: Manson (1973) Charles Manson Superstar (1989) TV Movies: Helter Skleter (2004) The Manson Family (2003) Songs: •Bloodbath in Paradise by Ozzy Osbourne •A Murmer in Decrepit Wits by Aborted •Death Valley 69 by Sonic Youth Lyrics from Bloodbath in Paradise: You’re comin’ home There’s blood on the walls When Charlie and the Family made house calls If you’re alone Then watch what you do ‘cos Charlie and the Family might get you
