African Countries and Landforms on the Standards By: Lucas Pitts Physical Features: The Sahara The Sahara is a large portion of the dry land in northern Africa. It is basically a big desert above the Sahel and covers lots of countries. Sahel The Sahel is the area of land between the dry desert and the more moist savannah. Savanna The savanna is a tropical grassland with dispersed trees and many types of wildlife. It is located all across the continent. Tropical Rainforest The tropical rainforest of Africa covers parts of western Africa and most of central Africa. It supplies several countries around it with tourist attractions and wildlife reserves. This area receives lots of rainfall unlike dryer areas in Africa such as the Sahara and the Sahel. Congo River The Congo River is a river that runs through the Democratic Republic of the Congo and empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Niger River The Niger River runs through many countries in western Africa and then empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Nile River The Nile River flows north from Lake Victoria and empties into the Mediterranean Sea. The Nile River is the longest river in the world and plays a big part in the prosperity of Egyptians. Lake Tanganyika Lake Tanganyika is an African lake that borders mostly Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Tanzania. It is the second largest lake by volume and the second deepest lake too. Lake Victoria Lake Victoria is an African lake that borders Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. It is the supplier of the Nile River's water and is the second largest lake by surface area in the world. Atlas Mountains The Atlas Mountains are the biggest mountain range in Africa. They are located mainly in the country of Morocco. They are also the home of many Berber tribes. Kalahari Desert The Kalahari is a desert in southern Africa and mainly covers the countries of Namibia, South Africa and Botswana. Countries: Democratic Republic of the Congo The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a country located mainly in tropical rainforest biomes in central Africa. Egypt Egypt is the country where the Egyptians grew and thrived a long time ago. Egypt benefits from the Nile River that creates a trade route through the country. Kenya Kenya is a country in eastern Africa with a lot of tourist attractions which include mainly wildlife. Kenya has a President and a Prime Minister that have to share power. Nigeria Nigeria is a country in western Africa that is just recently highest on the economic scale compared to other countries in Africa. Their biggest export is oil, and they make lots of money from it. However, there is lots of corruption in Nigeria and a terrorist group called Boko Harram. South Africa South Africa is in the southernmost tip of Africa and is one of the highest rated African countries on the economic scale. They are considered to be part of the BRICS countries who are growing their economy rapidly. Nelson Mandela was a famous person from South Africa who helped end the apartheid that once was in this country. Sudan Sudan is an African Country in northern Africa. Sudan is mostly Muslim and has fought two civil wars with its non Muslim southern part. Sudan eventually split into two countries. South Sudan South Sudan is a country in northern Africa that split from Sudan in 2011 following two civil wars. South Sudan has Christian and other religions that are not usually Muslim. It is one of Africa’s least developed countries.
