Dissertation Extension Proposal
Application Package
The Graduate School recognizes that unexpected personal events and/or scholarly demands can
potentially delay completion of the dissertation beyond the sixth year. For graduate students in
good standing and with program endorsement who are beyond the sixth year, the Graduate
School grants tuition scholarships.
The Graduate School provides limited other funding for students in the Humanities and Social
Sciences who are beyond year six of doctoral studies. Students may submit a Dissertation
Extension Proposal (DEP) application to request tuition scholarships, health insurance and health
services fees. Please note that priority for the latter will be given to students in earlier years and
that no stipend funding is available for students beyond the sixth year. Graduate School sign-off
on external funding, required in some instances for students to be eligible for external grants that
could provide stipend funding, also requires the submission of a Dissertation Extension Proposal
(DEP).
Students who are scheduled to hold research assistantships funded by external grants or contracts
with standard tuition arrangements, or whose complete funding (including tuition) derives from
sources outside the Graduate School, do not need to submit a proposal. Before submitting a
proposal, students should discuss the path to completion with their program’s DGS and with
their dissertation advisor.
The Dissertation Extension Proposal: the Student Section is due directly to the program. The
program completes the remaining elements of the Dissertation Extension Proposal and forwards
the complete application package to the Graduate School.
A complete application package consists of:
1. DEP: Student section
2. DEP: Program DGS Section
There is no DEP: Program Chair Section
The program should forward the complete package to the Graduate School by email to:
graduate_dean@brown.edu. All forms are due at the Graduate School by 5:00 pm on the second
Friday in March. DEP Applications submitted after this date will be considered in mid-summer.
