Marriage
The marriage can be religious (in church) or in a civil ceremony. Today only 50% of people get
married in church. The average age for men to get married is 25. The average age for women is 23.
In Britain most people date and marry:
11
-
people they live near
-
people they work with
-
people they go to school and university with.
-
people who are the same age
And are the things the same in your country?
Read the description of the steps to marriage in a Church of England wedding.
Banns - оглашение в церкви имен вступающих в брак
Aisle – [ ail] – проход между рядами в церкви
The first step is the engagement. To mark this, James gives Carol an engagement ring.
James and Carol decide on a church wedding and arrange a date with the vicar of their local church.
For three weeks banns are read out to tell the people that Carol and James want to get married.
On the day of the wedding James arrives first with a friend. The friend is the best man. James waits
at the altar with the best man.
Carol arrives later with her father, her bridesmaids and a page boy. Carol follows the tradition by
being late and wearing white. For luck, she wears
Something old, something new,
Something borrowed and something blue.
She walks up the aisle with her father by her side. The bridesmaids and pageboy help with the
flowers and dress.
After Carol’s father gives her away, she and James take the marriage vows (клятва) in turn:
‘I (name) take thee (name) to be my wedding husband (wife), to have and to hold from this day
forward, for better or worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish,
till death do us part, according to God’s holy ordinance; and thereto I plight thee my troth’.
The vicar blessed the wedding ring and places it on the third finger of the bride’s left hand. These
days, the bride-groom often wears a ring too. As they leave the church together, their friends throw
confetti and rice. The friends and family go to a reception where there is a lot of food and drink.
They drink a toast to the bride and groom, eat a slice of wedding cake and listen to the speeches.
During the reception Carol changes from her wedding dress into her going away clothes and they
go off for a honeymoon in Portugal.

my Dad, my two brothers, and me. My grandparents don’t live with us.
I’m seventeen. My elder brother is twenty, he’s not married yet. He doesn’t study, he works. My
younger brother is twelve; he’s at school. I really love my brothers. My brothers and I look like our
Dad and we take after him. We’re great friends and always help each other. I wouldn’t like to be the
only child.
My Mum is 40. She’s an economist and works in a bank. My Dad is a very serious man. He is a
university professor. He’s a physicist. He’s always very busy at the university and at home.
Sometimes he even works at the weekends. We’ve got a lot of books at home and I hope I’ll be
ready to read some of them one day. Dad wants me to study physics but I don’t think I’m as
interested in it as he is.
My Mum works five days a week and is off on Saturdays and Sundays. She devotes all her time to
the family. She does everything about the house: she cooks, does the cleaning and washing and
goes shopping. In the evening Mum likes to read a magazine or a book or to watch TV.
15
At weekends we usually go round to my grandparents’. They live in the country. They’re retired.
My grandma likes to work in the small garden where she grows different vegetables and flowers.

John: Yeah, I’m in Redmond block 2.
Claire: Oh, so am I. That’s a coincidence.
John: Where are you from?
Claire: Newcastle.
John: I used to live in the North East too but now I live in Leeds. Are you 18?
Claire: No, I’m actually 20. I took a year out after school and travelled round Europe.
John: Really? My sister is in South America at the moment on a gap year. She’s two year older than
I am. Have you got any brothers or sisters?
Claire: No, I’m an only child. I caused my parents so many hassles they didn’t want any more
children! My Dad is a doctor and he works 24 hours a day – he’s really busy.
John: What does your Mum do?
Claire: She works for “Boots”. She’s a chemist. They met at medical school.
John: Oh, look! The lecture’s about to start …
… I can’t believe it’s more home work!
Claire: Never mind. If you can spare some time, maybe we could go to the pub?

… Have you joined any clubs or societies yet?

John: Yeah, I usually go clubbing with my friends at the weekends.
Claire: I’ve heard there are some good clubs here in Sheffield.
John: Are you planning to go home to Newcastle this weekend?
Claire: Yes. I’ve got a boyfriend there. We’ve been going out for two years and this is the first time
I’ve lived away from home, so he’s probably missing me. We usually go out on Saturday.
John: Listen, I’ve got to dash – the canteen shuts at 7. What room are you in, by the way?
