PURPOSE OF POETRY
• Poetry is excellent for describing or
explaining feelings that can’t exactly be
put into sentences.
• Poetry gives us an opportunity to
practice descriptive writing, figurative
language and other techniques.

LINES
• Definition: The method for organizing
poems. The space between lines are
called “line breaks”
EXAMPLE:

SOUND DEVICES
Alliteration: The repetition of consonant
sounds at the beginning of 2 or more
words
Examples
1) “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled
peppers…”

Assonance: The repetition of vowel sounds
at any place in a series of words

Simile: A comparison of two nouns using the words like

Metaphor: A comparison of two nouns saying that one

given qualities of a person
