Internal TODAY IS POETRY DAY PURPOSE OF POETRY • Poetry is excellent for describing or explaining feelings that can’t exactly be put into sentences. • Poetry gives us an opportunity to practice descriptive writing, figurative language and other techniques. POETRY TERMS • Lines • Assonance • Consonance • Alliteration • Similes/Metaphors • Personification LINES • Definition: The method for organizing poems. The space between lines are called “line breaks” EXAMPLE: This is a poem with line breaks like this. SOUND DEVICES Alliteration: The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of 2 or more words Examples 1) “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers…” 2) “Rain races, ripping like wind. SOUND DEVICES CONT. Assonance: The repetition of vowel sounds at any place in a series of words (A, E, I, O, U) Examples • Do you like blue? • He seemed so low that I couldn’t say no SOUND DEVICES CONT. Consonance: The repetition of a consonant sound at any place in a series of words. Examples • Eric liked the black book • “And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain” FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE Simile: A comparison of two nouns using the words like or as • “My love for you is like a red, red rose” Metaphor: A comparison of two nouns saying that one thing is another • “All the world is a stage” Personification: When a non-living object has been given qualities of a person • The wind whispered through the trees • The moon danced on the water • “Oreo: Milk’s favorite cookie.” “I AM LEGEND” POETRY DAY • Option 1: Write a poem using the “I Am” format about a person of your choice.
