LO1 – Task 1 Ownership Paul Smith and Jasper Carrot created the celador company as an independent production in the year 1983. As time moved on, they were taken over by complete communications which bought out the shareholders. Under the ownership of complete communications, Celador expanded its radio, film and businesses. Later on, Complete Communications announced it was going to sell the company around the same time as the sell off of Celador International and the rights and associated properties of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Operating Model Celador is only a small production company that makes films as projects. They contract freelance staff to get their films made, which means that they only make that certain film. Small production companies like Celador often get their funding through initial capitalization & circumstances, this can be through bank loans, investors or even personal finance. There could also be matching finance available from the West Midlands. They can also be funded by their parent company, although in Celadors position this would not be the case Co-funding and partnership could also be an option, usually a lot of smaller companies get together to make a film and put together their funds. They could operate through distribution fees by selling the project to a distributor before it’s made and they could also license the project to a big production company. The Descent was Co-Funded by celador using profit they made & the other half of the budget came from them selling the distribution Products From 1999, Celador began creating films & they’ve created several titles since. Centurion (2010) The scouting book for boys (2009) The Descent: Part Two (2009) Slumdog Millionaire (2008) Separate Lies (2005) The Descent (2005) Dirty Pretty Things (2002) Who Wants To Be A Millionaire (2002) Detective (1993) On the other hand, they’re also working on some production from 2013 to do with there own 18 UK station. Who wants to be a millionaire & detective. Market Position & competitors Celador is a competition of course with ticket sales and later on after the film is released DVD sales. Celador is a small production company although they are actually quite successful. They have only released seven films in ten years. Although Celador is just a small company, It still has big competitors. One of their big competitors is Sony Pictures Entertainment. Sony release big budget films such as The Smurths and After Death. These films cost over 100million whereas the budgets for Celador films are much lower. Sony Pictures Entertainment also release several movies a year, where as the past 10 years Celador have only released 7, which Sony could produce in 2 years with the money and budgets they have. The budget of The Descent (Celador) was £3,500,000 whereas the budget of Spiderman 3(Sony Pictures) was £258,000,000 & rightly so that’s how the two companies compare. This is England (Film Four) on the other hand was £1,472,500 which see’s a massive difference from Sony’s Spiderman 3 & even The Descent from Celador. This shows Celador is less successful then Sony Pictures & more successful than Film four.
