San Francisco State University, Department of Kinesiology invites applicants for a tenure-track
Assistant Professor position in Adapted Physical Education/Activity (APE/A) beginning August,
2016. The department seeks individuals whose emphasis is in promoting physical activity in
persons with disabilities across the lifespan including healthy children and healthy aging, and
school/community-based programming and interventions. The department has about 800
majors and offers two bachelors’ (Exercise and Movement Science, and Physical Education) and
a master’s degree. The department embraces an interdisciplinary approach to Kinesiology that
emphasizes the influence of the form, function, and effectiveness of movement and physical
activity across the lifespan and for special populations, such as individuals with disabilities or
chronic diseases.
Qualifications:
Candidates should have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a sub-discipline of Kinesiology. ABD
candidates are encouraged to apply, but must have completed their doctoral degree by the first
day of the appointment. Candidates should have strong experience in K-12 and college
teaching, and the ability to work within a multidisciplinary department as a member of a team
and within a multicultural and diverse academic setting. Candidates must demonstrate
effectiveness as a teacher as well as the ability to teach courses in the areas of Adapted Physical
Activity and Education.
Candidates must have an active record of scholarship related to the position and evidence of
external support or the potential for external funding of these activities are expected. Interest
and ability to extend expertise into the community is desirable. Preference will be given to
those with a demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity or those with
teaching and/or research experience with a large, diverse student body.
Responsibilities: The position requires graduate and undergraduate teaching in APE/A,
mentoring and advising graduate and undergraduate students, developing an active ongoing
scholarship program in APE/A, and ongoing committee and service assignments.
Rank and salary: Assistant Professor. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
