Analyze this Quote:
• “No one would believe me, but at times I
would prefer wartime in Saigon to peacetime
in Alabama.” (p. 195)
• Based on the last two days, what do you think
might have to happen to a little girl to make
her say that she would prefer war at home in
Saigon (Vietnam) to peace in Alabama (the
United States)?

M1 U1 L3 – Text Dependent Questions
1. (two parts to this question – did you answer
both?)
• The poem title is the beginning of the novel title:
“Inside Out”
• These first two poems refer to predicting good or bad
luck for the rest of the year; The use of words
“predicts” (second poem, stanza 1) and “foretells” (first
poem, stanza 3) connect the two poems.

• 2. On page 4 in stanza 1, the fortune teller
“predicts that our lives with twist inside out.”
We don’t really know what this means but it
doesn’t sound positive. “Fate” synonym with
“destiny” – both are out of a person’s control.

• 3. In the second stanza of the poem, Ha
hopes that “soldiers will no longer patrol our
neighborhood,” to “jump rope after dark,” and
that the “whistles …will stop screeching.”
Basically she doesn’t want to have to hide
from danger.

• 4. In the last stanza, Ha states, “the war is
coming closer to home.” This is probably what
will make her life different, or “inside out.”
