Most graphing calculators follow the Order of Operations and will
interpret y = –2x as y = –(2x) rather than as y = (–2x). To graph y = (–2x),
students need to enter b with parentheses.
In addition, if students try to graph functions with negative values of
b, such as y = (–2x), in a standard viewing window, they will see
nothing. However, if they press ZOOM 4: ZDecimal, a discrete graph
will be displayed. Pressing ZOOM 6: ZStandard will reset the window
from –10 to 10 in both directions again.
