Unit Summary The right triangle is one of the most important geometrical figures, used in many applications for thousands of years. This unit focuses on the concepts about right triangles, how to solve for the missing parts of it and its real world application. Students are provided the time to integrate technology in the activities and so in this topic, students will be given exercises. Students will also be exposed to different solving problems for the practice of skills. By the end of this unit, the students progress to work in groups to create problems that relates to real world application and be able to illustrate it in the geometer’s sketch pad. Targeted State Frameworks/Content Standards/Benchmarks The learner demonstrates understanding of the key concepts and principles of right triangles as applied integrating appropriate technology, in critical thinking, problem solving, reasoning, making connections , representations and decision in real life. Student Objectives/Learning Outcomes At the end of the unit, the students would be able to: Identify the parts of a right triangle. Give examples of right triangle that they can see in the surroundings. Solve the missing parts of a right triangle. Illustrate/draw the right triangle based from the given problem using the Geometer’s Sketch Pad. Create a real-life problem applying the right triangles. Curriculum-Framing Questions Before: How is visualization essential to the study of geometry? Essential Question During: What is the relevance of solving for the missing parts of a right triangle? After: Why is this going to be needed? Before: What are the different kinds of geometric figures? Unit Questions During: Why do we measure or solve for the missing parts of the triangle? How are students going to use this lesson in life? Before: What are right triangles? Content Questions During: What are the different situations involving right triangles? After: In what ways will they be able to apply solving for the right triangles? To answer the CONTENT QUESTIONS … • Prior to starting the unit Using the K-W-L Chart the students will word processed what they what to know, what they want to know and what they learned. •Introduction A short of Video Clip will be show to the class which describes the parts of the right triangle. There will also be a PowerPoint presentation in which real life examples will be introduced. This PowerPoint was one of the presentations used to introduce the concept about Right Triangles To answer the UNIT QUESTIONS… • Problem Solving Practice. The students will be provided worksheets to practice their problem solving skills. The teacher will roam around the classroom to check students’ work. • Exploring the Geometer’s Sketch Pad. During the whole duration of the topic, the students will be provided the time to use the computer lab or laptops on how to use the Geometer’s Sketch pad. The teacher will teach the basic construction of points, lines, shapes and so on and be able to illustrate problems. Assessment part. - Quiz/ worksheets will be given. - The teacher will give problems in which students will have to illustrate it using the Geometer’s Sketch pad and to be passed to the teacher. This assessment will just be an informal assessment or will serve as a practice for students to apply it to the final output that will be given by the teacher. (student support) How they will be assessed? • Before starting the lesson the student will be given a short pretest to assess their knowledge about the subject matter. • After every subtopics, their will be exercises or assignments given to check their understanding of the lesson. • By time the whole lesson is finished, post test will be given to check if they have understood and improved. • Quizzes/ assignments • Students’ solution to the problems and Geometer’s sketch pad files PROJECT By the end of the topic, the students are expected to make connections of solving right triangles to real world application and integrate technology. As part of their final output for the lesson, the students will have to make compilations of problems in which they are the one who will make it that shows real-life situation wherein there is an application of solving right triangles, they will solve for it and illustrate the problem using a Geometer’s Sketch pad. Together with it is each member’s journal reflection of the whole lesson up to their project making.
