Arizona Academia-Practice Collaboration on New Grad RN Evidence-Based Nurse of the
Future Core Competency Model, Oct 11 & Oct 12, 2012
By Paulette C. Compton, RN, MSN, MC
Program Director

On October 11th and 12th, 2012, the AZ Action Coalition, AZBN, AZNA, AZONE sponsored two
exciting events to initiate the Arizona process of collaboration between practice and academia
to improve didactic and clinical nursing education. Both events were extremely successful, as
demonstrated by the number of registered participants, enthusiasm of the participants, selfreport of participants, number of volunteers for the AZ Education-Practice Collaborative Task
Force, and the Oct 12th evaluation results.
Maureen Sroczynski, DNP, MS, RN was sponsored by CCNA , as the keynote speaker for both
events. She is the former Chief Nursing Consultant for the Massachusetts Dept of Higher
Education Nursing Initiative on the Nurse of the Future Core Competency Model. The initiative
was a collaborative process between education and practice to review the evidence and identify
the nurse of the future core competencies. In the past, it has not been common practice for
education and practice to collaborate on new grad competences; it was usual practice for
education and practice to each determine their own new grad competencies.
The need to improve new grad practice readiness was identified by the Advisory Board, who
identified new grad competencies and found 90% of academia was satisfied but only 10% of
practice was satisfied with new grad practice readiness. In addition, in AZ the need to improve
clinical education experiences has been identified with the shrinking clinical placement options
and concerns about how to provide the best quality clinical education experiences.
The major goal of the planning committee was for education and practice to develop a
beginning shared understanding of new graduate RN competencies for successful entry into
practice. The target outcome was to establish an AZ Education-Practice Collaborative Task
Force to lead the implementation of the plan to improve didactic and clinical nursing education
to prepare the nurse of the future. This task force will be lead and supported by the AZ Action
Coalition, Education Task Force.
Overall, the interest in attending the events and the willingness to volunteer to be a member of
the AZ Education-Practice Collaborative Task Force was a resounding success.

The results of the evaluations clearly indicate 94% of the Oct 12th participants who responded to
the survey rated the event as meeting the overall purpose/goal for this activity. Practice and
Education will identify a specific plan for collaboration to improve clinical education experiences
and to resolve clinical education problems & establish an Action Coalition Ad Hoc Task Force to
lead the implementation of the identified clinical education plan and future plans.
Maureen S. was outstanding as the keynote speaker and facilitator as evidenced by the
exceptionally positive evaluations by 90% of the evaluators. She provided the correct mix of
educator, facilitator, and encourager functions to stimulate the initiation of the education-practice
collaborative task force in AZ.
