Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Specialist, Network and Information Technology (IT), is responsible for maintenance of directory services, network operating systems, network security practices, and network problem troubleshooting. The position implements distributed applications, ensures network authentication, and assists with network security design and implementation. The individual installs and troubleshoots problems dealing with network communications hardware, ensures systems integration and optimization, and provides supporting and monitoring services. The position ensures compliance with computer network communication protocols and maintains Virtual Local Area Networks (VLAN’s). In addition to being a member of the IT Network Operation team, the Network and IT Specialist supports the Crowley Student Union (CSU) overall computer operational needs. This is a shared position, reporting to both the Associate Director, Unified Communications and Network Operations, within IT and the Associate Director, Student Union Programs at the CSU. 2. Information Technology Responsibilities – 50% 15% - Network Operations Administration Installs, tests and maintains network information systems defined above Updates network documentation to reflect changes Assists departmental management with development of systems standards; performs needs analysis and provides procurement support, installation, and problem resolution for local and wide-area networks Serves as the primary liaison between IT and CSU 15% - Network Analysis, Design, and Implementation Ensures proper security protocols are adhered to while performing job functions Provides configuration, operation, and administration of network hardware and communications links Works with departments, colleges and students on campus to evaluate needs 15% - Network Evaluation and Troubleshooting Provides analyses of users’ needs and recommends appropriate network configurations to meet users’ needs and departmental standards Performs advanced diagnostics and maintenance on network devices when additional expertise is required with layer 1 and 2 network layers Performs preventative and fault isolation maintenance on the local and wide area networks with layer 3 and above network layers Provides preventative maintenance on computer-related equipment Resolves network related trouble calls that could not be resolved by the Help Desk, computer system administrators, or network wiring technicians 5% - Network Security Maintains and manages network security for local and wide area networks Position Description – Specialist, Network and Information Technology Page 3 CSU Responsibilities – 50% 30% - IT Administration Manages software packages and licenses (VISIX, EMS, ASANA, Meeting Matrix, Sensor, etc.) for frequently used programs by CSU staff Identifies and researches options and provides recommendations to Associate Director on computer-related purchases including, computers, software packages, televisions monitors, printers, etc. Collaborates with CSU and IT staff on planning and reports Recommends service contracts with outside vendors for computer-related equipment in CSU Works with vendors in CSU to verify credit card machines and Internet Access is in compliant with university, local, state, and federal laws and policies and to ensure accurate operating hours are posted on vendor signage and web sites 20% - Oversight of IT Operations Trains staff and oversees projects delegated to IT student workers; i.e., maintaining inventory of computer-related equipment for non-event spaces in CSU; updating CSU departmental web site; providing support and training of front line users on software packages and use of computers, conducting basic computer problem resolution, etc. Troubleshoots and resolves IT network, software, and hardware-related issues at events occurring in CSU facilities in coordination with the CSU Technology Coordinator Works with IT and all areas in CSU to maintain the server and shared drive spaces on the University’s network Handles escalated problems and complicated computer-related troubleshooting for CSU 3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or the university as a whole. Level of Freedom: The Specialist works with independent discretion to diagnose and resolve outages and problems with basic trouble shooting skills and makes recommendations to user and supervisor on equipment and costs. The individual’s judgment exercised does not typically extend beyond established precedent without consultation with peers or supervisor, i.e., decisions regarding new technology or equipment needs. The position consults with supervisor on more complex trouble shooting issues and is advised on unresolved issues. Good judgment is necessary for the individual to determine when to contact CSU professional staff and campus personnel in case of an emergency. The person is part of a campus partnership with Teaching (TLT) and Learning Technology and Information Technology (IT)) for technology support. Impact: Critical to all departments, colleges, and students of the University, the network infrastructure must be reliable, efficient, and secure. Failure to analyze and problem solve, make good decisions, and perform well, often in high-pressure situations, may result in network failures, viruses, or computer security breaches. These incidents may result in loss of data, compromise security of personal and financial data, and impact university-wide productivity. Extended unscheduled outages of the network infrastructure negatively impact research, administrative functions, classroom, and student activities. Federal and industry regulations (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA), Procurement Card Industry (PCI), etc.) must be adhered to in all applicable networks. Failure to comply could result in fines, citations and/or shutdown of network services. Failures result in loss of service and functionality within the University. With regard to work performed with the CSU, the individual must ensure the success of high profile events such as those hosted by the University President, the Board of Regents, and the Alumni Association. It is critical that positive relationships with campus IT be achieved. 4.
