SICK CALL/HEALTH
Should you get sick or injured at OVLS:
- Cadets will report to Sick Call Room for any medical problems FIRST. Instructor
personnel will make the determination if cadet needs further assistance through host Air Force
Clinics/Hospital.
- Sick Call Clinic hours will be posted and briefed to cadets.
- Hospital/Emergency Room are used only outside normal duty hours
- Parental consent forms must accompany sick/injured cadet
- All medications will be under the control of cadets SASI/ASI.
- All recurring medications (daily—allergies, antibiotics, etc) prescribed by a physician
will be under control of the SASI/ASI and administered IAW school policies.
- Cadets will not be authorized to keep any over the counter medications
– EVERYTHING MUST BE TURNED IN UPON ARRIVAL OVLS
- Parental permission must be received prior to any cadet taking any over the counter
medications (pain relievers, cold medications, etc) this permission must be in writing
- Home school instructors and OVLS staff must be informed, in writing by a qualified
physician, of all medical conditions affecting a cadet that could hinder their training. The medical
condition must be identified, explained, and restrictions listed. Cadets will not be excused from
training activities unless a verifiable medical condition exists. Cadets not able to participate in
training will be evaluated by a qualified physician and placed on restriction to recover
- Any injury or condition that will prevent a cadet from participating in training may be
grounds for dismissal. A case by case review will be conducted to determine if a cadet will be
sent home or stay at OVLS with limitations. IF A CADET IS SENT HOME, CREDIT FOR OVLS
WILL BE AT THE DISCRETION OF THE COMMANDER, (every attempt will be made to retain
every cadet)
- Cadets who seek medical aid and complain of not being able to perform training will be
evaluated and school instructor will be notified. The instructor will make the decision to contact
a parent/guardian, seek addition medical care, or send cadet home.
- Any cadet who cannot participate in one activity will not be permitted to participate in
other activities until illness/injury is re-evaluated and cadet is cleared for training. Example: a
cadet complains of stomach pains or soreness in the morning and cannot participate in physical
training, but feels good by mid-day to participate in canoeing and other activities. Cadets who
continually use sick call as an avenue to not participate in training will be evaluated by the
school instructor for continuance at OVLS or dismissal.
It is usually hot in the Dayton area during OVLS. While there, all cadets need to
drink plenty of water to preclude any dehydration problems - - - DRINK AT LEAST
TWO GLASSES OF WATER AT EVERY MEAL PLUS WATER IN-BETWEEN.
ALL CADETS WILL BE REQUIRED TO HAVE A CANTEEN/WEB BELT OR
SIMILAR CONTAINER.
INTEGRITY FIRST -SERVICE BEFORE SELF - EXCELLENCE IN ALL WE DO
4
SECURITY
- The dorm building will be secured (entry doors to the floors will be locked) – dorm rooms
will be unsecured. Rooms will remain UNLOCKED at all times -- at no time should a
room be locked for any purpose.
- Ensure all valuables are locked and/or secured. The best solution is not to bring
valuables to OVLS. If you do, it is done at your own risk! We suggest you give them
to your instructor for safekeeping
- Keep suitcases locked/secured whenever cadet is not within their personal area, i.e.,
within arm’s reach -- this includes during hours of darkness/sleeping
- All room doors MUST be secured (CLOSED) at all times when cadets are not in the
dormitory – the last cadet departing the room will secure the room. All room members
and the Bay Chief will be held responsible for the security of dormitory rooms. A door
found open without cadets in the room will be considered unsecured and appropriate
action will be taken below:
** FAILURE TO SECURE ROOM OR PERSONAL BELONGINGS WILL RESULT IN A
SECURITY VIOLATION AND COUNT AGAINST INDIVIDUAL ROOM/BAY/ SCORES
** WE WILL BE LOCATED ON A UNIVERSITY CAMPUS AND ENTRY/DEPARTURE WILL
BE STRICTLY MONITORED – CADETS WILL BE SAFE AND UNDER THE CONSTANT
SUPERVISION OF AIR FORCE JROTC PERSONNEL
SAFETY
- All cadets need to know emergency procedures for their DORMITORY
- All cadets need to know that in case of an emergency -- their “form up location” is the
PT/drill area
- All personnel need to vacate the dormitory during any emergency – a must for accurate
accountability (this will be done by Flight and Squadron Commanders) – CTAs will
verify.
- Safety awareness needs to be instilled in all cadets to preclude any possible safety
related problems while at OVLS
FORBIDDEN ITEMS
ALCOHOL, ILLEGAL DRUGS, TOBACCO PRODUCTS including matches and/or lighters,
KNIVES OR WEAPONS OF ANY KIND or SIZE, BOOM BOXES, CD PLAYERS, PDAs, MP3
players, etc. We do not recommend you bring a cell phone – all cell phones will be
turned into SASI/ASI. If used they will be strictly monitored for communication between
you and your parents/guardians only. There will be an inspection upon arrival, all
forbidden items will be confiscated.
I WILL NOT LIE, CHEAT OR STEAL, NOR TOLERATE THOSE WHO DO

SEVEN BASIC RESPONSES
10
PHYSICAL FITNESS
Physical fitness is an integral part of the OVLS. We encourage all of our cadets to maintain a
healthy lifestyle and actively engage in numerous physical activities. Accordingly, we will expose
you to a number of physical fitness activities, to include morning physical training (PT), drill, and
sports such as volleyball, swimming, and ultimate Frisbee.
We will also administer the OVLS Physical Fitness Test (PFT), see attachments for
detailed PFT information, and if you pass you will receive points toward your overall OVLS
composite score. Additionally, we will identify the most physically fit cadets at OVLS with the
Iron Man/Iron Woman and Fleetfoot awards.
The PFT consists of three events; sit-ups, push-ups, and a 1-mile run. The score sheet
we will use is included in this guide. You must achieve the required repetitions and the minimum
score, to successfully pass the PFT.
All cadets should be able to complete the PFT prior to arriving at OVLS. You don’t have
to pass the PFT to successfully complete OVLS, but you are highly encouraged to do your best.
Recommend you prepare for the rigors of physical activity prior to arriving at camp. If you do not
have an active lifestyle or exercise regularly, it is encouraged you start preparing yourself NOW.
Before arriving at OVLS, you should know how to do each exercise on the PFT. See
attachments for PFT procedures -- general rules and exercise completion guidelines.
BAY/ROOM INSPECTIONS
All Bay/Room Inspections will be conducted while cadets are performing other training activities
or present as a standby inspection – cadets should expect no-notice inspections and be ready at
all times during the training day until 1800 hours. The First Inspection will be a “FREE
INSPECTION”, thereafter; all inspections will be annotated on the inspection sheet as shown in
this guide. Should a cadet receive a repeat write-up, that problem area will receive double
discrepancy points (minus) from the previous day’s amount and so forth, until the problem is
corrected (continued violations and you will fail inspection on that day).
Personal area discrepancies are accountable only to the cadet living in that room area.
Common area discrepancy points for common room/bay areas (inside or outside) are
assessed to all cadets living in the room/bay (everyone in the room/bay is responsible for
common bay areas – work together)
1. All Room/Personal Area Inspection Forms MUST have cadet’s printed name (First and Last,
Must Be Legible) on them as well as Floor, Flight, and Bed Number information. They must be
displayed on the desk – flush with the front and centered from side to side. Inspection sheets
must be reviewed/initialed every day there is an inspection.
NOTE: Common room areas (floor, sink, window, blinds, etc); bathrooms (bathroom, toilet,
shower, closet, floor, etc); and common bay areas (hallways, common day room) are the
responsibility of all persons who share the common area. Any discrepancy and points will be
deducted from each person responsible for the appropriate common area.
PAIN IS INEVITABLE - SUFFERING IS OPTIONAL
11
2. All inspection forms that are missing, soiled, torn, or damaged will be assessed up to 30
discrepancy points daily. Forms not initialed as required will receive 10 demerits.
3. After the first inspection, if you do not have your name on your form, your form is not
present, or you fail to review/initial properly you will be automatically removed for any
honors consideration at this school. Attention to detail and following simple instructions
will insure this does not happen.
4. Each room and bay area will remain in “Inspection Order” even after the initial inspection by
the inspection team. Spot checks are possible at any time until 1800 hours.
5. Inspection forms will be completed by inspector and returned – Bay Chiefs will ensure forms
are reviewed and initialed by each cadet and appropriate corrections are made.
6. Additional inspection sheets are available and must be requested by the Bay Chief from the
NCOIC, Standardization and Inspection. (See Attachment 7)
7. Any and all lights will be turned off when ALL cadets leave their room, floor, dorm.
8. Blinds will be open, with slats parallel to the floor, when cadets are not in the room.
9. Room Thermostat will be set at 68 degrees, when cadets are not in the room.
Safety Exceptions: A small light may be left on in the room during hours of darkness or when
cadets are present. Outside lights will be left on at all times during hours of darkness whether
cadets are present or not.
NOTE: CTA’s will check for room accountability (headcount)/security – room doors closed.
Bay Chief will be the last one out of the Bay in the morning.
GENERAL OBSERVATIONS
- Clean clothing will be hung up or in civilian luggage. If dirty, place in a laundry bag
- Sleeping on top of sheets/blankets will not be tolerated. ALL BEDS will be made every
morning, insuring that you take all the wrinkles out--TEAMWORK IS VITAL. Help your buddy
and your buddy will help you.
NOTE: ONCE A BED IS MADE IN ACCORDANCE WITH STANDARDS, STAFF WILL NOT
TRASH BEDS (PULL BACK BLANKETS, PULL OUT CORNERS, PULL MATTRESS FROM
FRAME, ETC) FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF CADETS HAVING TO REACCOMPLISH.
HOWEVER, BEDS THAT ARE NOT WITHIN STANDARDS OR JUST PLAIN LACKING ANY
EFFORT WILL BE DEALT WITH DURING DAILY ROOM INSPECTIONS.
- CTA’s are placed within the Bays as a liaison between cadets and Staff, use the chain of
command.
Lights out is between 2200 and 2230 hours (schedule dependent): No one will be up after
this time except for emergency situations (like going to the latrine). Cadets staying up after lights
out to do details or just talk with other cadets will not be tolerated. Lights Outs means QUIET
and GO TO SLEEP!! Cadets will not get up in the morning prior to being told.
The schedule ensures adequate rest is provided.
REST – REST – REST – REST – REST
12
ROOM SET-UP/DETAILS
1. Complete the “Dorm Floor/Room Assignments” sheet (included in this package). This tells
who is assigned to what bed in case of an emergency. Empty beds also need to be annotated
on the form as “EMPTY”. PLACE THIS FORM ON THE WALL TO THE RIGHT OF THE ROOM
ENTRY DOOR APPROXIMATELY EYE LEVEL. NOTE: This form is an inspectable item and
must remain updated – RESPONSIBILITY OF THE BAY CHIEF AND ROOM OCCUPANTS.
2. Work as a team (Buddy System) and appoint a key person to be “In Charge or Responsible”
for any detailed area within the room, such as shoes, floors, latrine, beds, uniforms, etc. Bay
Chiefs are ultimately responsible for all areas within their bay, to include rooms. They
should be “checking” and “following up” to insure the job/details is being done correctly.
Attention to detail will get the job done correctly the first time around.
3. Set up your room/personal area the night before as much as possible. This will give you more
time to “fine tune” any problem areas in the morning.
4. Each cadet must have their personal copy of the 2014 OVLS Cadet Guide posted on their
desk – grounded to the front of the desk and centered next to their daily Room/Personal
Inspection sheet. The guide must have the cadet name – failure to have this guide posted on
the desk will result in points being deducted from daily room inspection.

ROOM/BAY STANDARDIZATION
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:
- All personal areas will be set up in the same configuration as instructed per room
standardization
- Notify Bay Chief of any unserviceable items as soon as possible
- Beds will be clean
- Shoes will be clean and shined as appropriate (see shoe display section page 15).
- Pay special attention to your Wall Locker where you hang your uniforms, clothes, and keep
toiletries, underwear, socks, etc in the drawers. Do not have the idea “Out-of-Sight, Out-ofMind” – your wall locker will receive special attention and should not be taken lightly!
KEEP YOUR FACE TO THE SUNSHINE AND YOU CANNOT SEE A SHADOW
13
- IMPORTANT!!!! Each cadet will review his/her Room/Personal Inspection Sheet daily and
place their initials in the appropriate column (below inspector’s name) – this will indicate you
have reviewed the sheet and understand discrepancies as noted. Failure to initial the form,
place initials in the correct box/column will result in additional discrepancy points being added to
the next inspection. Cadets will only initial the form when an inspection has been
conducted and on the correct day – initials on a day when an inspection was not
conducted or wrong day will result in additional discrepancy points. (Also see Room
Inspection Section)
BEDS (USE THE BUDDY SYSTEM):
- Frame - dust/clean where required--insure no trash or dirt on bed or floor around bed
- Sheets – Both sheets will have hospital corner folds and be tight to the bed.
- Blanket/Bedspread – Will be tight to the bed and folded under the mattress with hospital
corners and a four inch white collar made from the “TOP” sheet (sheet folded over blanket).
- Pillow – Will require a pillowcase and placed at the head of the bed with top of pillow grounded
to the end of the bed frame, bottom of the pillow grounded to the top of the four inch white collar
and centered on the mattress. Open end of pillow will face non-inspection side (wall) and tuck
any excess under pillow.
- Room/Personal Area Inspection Sheets – Place sheet on desk – grounded and centered to
the front of the desk (next to cadet copy of 2014 OVLS Cadet Guide) with all information
correctly completed on form. Ensure this sheet remains in good repair—a torn or soiled sheet
will result in minus points for inspection.

must be in-line with bed post and grounded to each other). Shoes will be grounded to cabinet
under the bed. Align toes (make even all toes) using an imaginary line from both bed frame legs
on inspection side. This will align shoes to bed. Military and other footwear will be shined and
kept clean at all times. If space is not available under your bed due to location of wall locker or
other items – you will be given proper placement instructions upon arrival at OVLS.

AFROTC PHYSICAL FITNESS TEST (PFT)
GENERAL GUIDANCE
Warm-up exercises must be conducted prior to the PFT. The PFT will be administered in the
following order: Push-ups, Sit-ups, and the 1 mile run (see attached exercise charts for both male
and female PFT standards) -- detailed PFT standards and procedures will be addressed by your
instructor and reaffirmed at OVLS. Basic exercise guidelines for each event are as follows:
Push-Ups:
Cadets will start in the up position with their arms fully extended and their feet no
wider than shoulder width. Cadets will complete as many repetitions as possible for
a one-minute period. A correct repetition consists of the body remaining straight
throughout the exercise and ensuring the elbows make a 90-degree angle. Cadets
may rest in the up position while arching their backs.
Sit-Ups:
Cadets will start in the down position lying on their backs and feet spread no wider
than shoulder width. Knees must remain at a 90-degree angle throughout the
exercise. Furthermore, cadets will do as many repetitions as possible for a oneminute period. A correct repetition consists of the arms being crossed resting on the
torso/shoulder area. Cadets will raise themselves up until the elbows touch the
knees/upper thighs and then return down until the shoulder blades contact the
ground. Cadets may rest in the up position, but may not rest their hands/elbows on
their knees.
1 Mile Run:
Cadets will complete a 1 mile run on a measured running surface.
