Giuseppe Arcimboldo
Arcimboldo spent the last 25 years of his
life as an Austrian court painter,
composing his portraits using different
types of fruits, vegetables, different
seasons and elements of the earth. A
style that is featured in his work is
‘mannerism’ (spatial incongruity and
excessive elongation of the human figure
One form of this in Arcimboldo’s art
work was the ability to have two pictures
in one painting simply by turning it
upside down.

“I have the gift of neither the spoken nor the written
word, especially if I have to say something about

something about me -as an artist, the only notable
thing- ought to look carefully at my pictures and try
and see in them what I am and what I want to do."
