Research Technician Position: Experimental evolution of eukaryotic pathogens University of Michigan, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Job Summary: A research technician position is available in the lab of Tim James at the University of Michigan. The research is for an NIH-funded project that seeks to understand the relative roles of mitotic recombination and mutation in pathogen evolution using an experimental host-pathogen system (yeast-invertebrate model). The applicant will be responsible for establishing, maintaining, and genetically analyzing the experimentally evolved lines of yeast and their hosts. Duties: The technician will be responsible for carrying out experiments including: DNA extraction, PCR, genetic transformation of yeast, and microscopy. The technician will be responsible for maintaining a large number of fungal strains, an insect colony, and will be responsible for serial passaging of the fungi through the insect host. This position involves daily responsibilities related to laboratory maintenance (i.e., maintaining supplies and stocks). The technician will also train and supervise undergraduate laboratory assistants, who will assist them with the above tasks, and instruct new lab members in techniques, procedures, and safety protocols. Daily interactions with the principal investigator and a postdoctoral fellow are required. Required qualifications: A B.S./B.A or M.S. in Biology or related field. At least 2 years of experience in a mycology, microbiology, or molecular biology lab is essential. Strong organizational skills, the ability to work with others, and attention to detail are needed. Persons with experience with yeast genetics would be particularly well suited. The position is available immediately and will remain open until filled. Pay will be based on experience ($32-$38K/salary). The initial appointment is for 1 year, with an opportunity for renewal for a second year. To apply: Interested applicants should send a PDF with a cover letter stating research interests and qualifications, a resume, and contact information for three references to tyjames@umich.edu. Informal inquiries are welcome. The University of Michigan is a non-discriminatory/affirmative action employer. The Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan harbors multiple labs with a focus on evolutionary genetics (http://www.lsa.umich.edu/eeb).
