Syllabus
English Department
Career Development, in its entirety, plus the individual assignments of
Job Shadowing and the Culminating Portfolio Project are Garnet Valley High School's
Culminating Projects for the State of Pennsylvania. Passing the Career Development
Class, completing job shadowing, and completion of the Career Development
portfolio will result in successful passage of the culminating project standard for the
State of Pennsylvania. Failure to complete the job shadowing, or failure to turn in the
complete portfolio will result in a failure of the class, irrespective of the grade in the
class. Failure of the class, and/or failure to complete job shadowing and/or failure to
turn in a complete portfolio will result in the student retaking Career Development
to graduate.
Portfolio Contents
As the semester progresses, students should keep these assignments in their portfolios.
Having a grade for an assignment does not preclude the fact that all assignments must be
physically included in the portfolio by the end of the semester.
(Musts: Keep a copy of all work; Carry a Flash Drive or use Google Docs/Drive) they
have a grade for an assignment does not count as it being present at the end of the
semportfolio.
Therefore, without exception, all assignments listed on the student’s Portfolio of
Career Development Requirements Checklists must be in the student portfolio at the
end of the semester or it is incomplete.

Career Development will also teach you about the different writing skills and
formats needed for:
 Writing essays
 College and career research and applications

establishing credit and making a life for yourself of which you can be proud.
Classroom Expectations
A good learning environment is completely dependent upon appropriate
behavior in class. Disruption and disrespect inhibit the learning process for the offending
student as well as all of the students in the class. In order to provide and maintain an
environment conducive to learning, you will be expected to follow the guidelines below.
All students are expected to act respectfully to their teacher(s)
and to their fellow students.
Students are expected to be in their assigned seat when the
bell rings. (No sitting on counter tops, desktops, etc.)
Late arrival to class requires a pass.
Do not abuse requests to leave class (i.e. bathroom, nurse).
Remember these are privileges! Especially, the bathroom! Only ask during appropriate
breaks in class---i.e. never during notes or class discussions.
Wait to be dismissed from class. (Do not get up before the bell
rings!)
Listen! Use active listening skills and DO NOT interrupt when
others are talking. Be respectful and polite!
Students are expected to demonstrate good study habits.
Students should come into class focused, prepared and ready to work and learn.
Students are expected to use appropriate language and
comments in the classroom/school environment. (No swearing or “silly” comments
inappropriate to the situation/environment) Respect others!
Water, only, is allowed in class. (No food, drink or electronic “toys”
Also, no use of cell phones unless part of class assignment. No texting during class. If you
are using your cell phone without permission, it will be taken.)
Get enough rest each evening.
Academic Requirements
Students are expected to take responsibility for their work.
Planning ahead and setting goals are important to success in class. Students should
practice good study habits both in school and at home, having an appropriate place to
study, maintaining a healthy diet and getting the proper rest.
When a student misses class time, the student is responsible for
turning in work that is due, getting notes, homework, etc. If you are absent, having
difficulty, or would like extra help, you are expected to sign up for enhancement.
Below are additional expectations for your success in class. Failure to meet these
expectations will affect your grade.
