Career Development Syllabus English Department Career Development, in its entirety, plus the individual assignments of Job Shadowing and the Culminating Portfolio Project are Garnet Valley High School's Culminating Projects for the State of Pennsylvania. Passing the Career Development Class, completing job shadowing, and completion of the Career Development portfolio will result in successful passage of the culminating project standard for the State of Pennsylvania. Failure to complete the job shadowing, or failure to turn in the complete portfolio will result in a failure of the class, irrespective of the grade in the class. Failure of the class, and/or failure to complete job shadowing and/or failure to turn in a complete portfolio will result in the student retaking Career Development to graduate. Portfolio Contents As the semester progresses, students should keep these assignments in their portfolios. Having a grade for an assignment does not preclude the fact that all assignments must be physically included in the portfolio by the end of the semester. (Musts: Keep a copy of all work; Carry a Flash Drive or use Google Docs/Drive) they have a grade for an assignment does not count as it being present at the end of the semportfolio. Therefore, without exception, all assignments listed on the student’s Portfolio of Career Development Requirements Checklists must be in the student portfolio at the end of the semester or it is incomplete. Course Overview Career Development is a course designed to prepare you for the opportunities that await you after high school. It will be different from most other courses you have taken in your life because this course is designed around YOU. You will explore your beliefs, values, likes, dislikes, personality, work/learning styles, and culture. This course is divided into four units: Who Am I? What are my goals? What are the costs and benefits of my choices? How do I get there? Fall 2015 Petrini 2 In Career Development you will also explore the real world of budgets, cost of living, delayed gratification, intrinsic satisfaction versus simple monetary gain, establishing credit and making a life for yourself of which you can be proud. Classroom Expectations A good learning environment is completely dependent upon appropriate behavior in class. Disruption and disrespect inhibit the learning process for the offending student as well as all of the students in the class. In order to provide and maintain an environment conducive to learning, you will be expected to follow the guidelines below. All students are expected to act respectfully to their teacher(s) and to their fellow students. Students are expected to be in their assigned seat when the bell rings. (No sitting on counter tops, desktops, etc.) Late arrival to class requires a pass. Do not abuse requests to leave class (i.e. bathroom, nurse). Remember these are privileges! Especially, the bathroom! Only ask during appropriate breaks in class---i.e. never during notes or class discussions. Wait to be dismissed from class. (Do not get up before the bell rings!) Listen! Use active listening skills and DO NOT interrupt when others are talking. Be respectful and polite! Students are expected to demonstrate good study habits. Students should come into class focused, prepared and ready to work and learn. Students are expected to use appropriate language and comments in the classroom/school environment. (No swearing or “silly” comments inappropriate to the situation/environment) Respect others! Water, only, is allowed in class. (No food, drink or electronic “toys” Also, no use of cell phones unless part of class assignment. No texting during class. If you are using your cell phone without permission, it will be taken.) Get enough rest each evening. Academic Requirements Students are expected to take responsibility for their work. Planning ahead and setting goals are important to success in class. Students should practice good study habits both in school and at home, having an appropriate place to study, maintaining a healthy diet and getting the proper rest. When a student misses class time, the student is responsible for turning in work that is due, getting notes, homework, etc. If you are absent, having difficulty, or would like extra help, you are expected to sign up for enhancement. (Petrini) Fall - 2015 3 Class Requirements: You are required to have the following: o 3-subject notebook (Notes, Homework, Classwork; Projects/Papers; College/Work Related, i.e. Job Shadowing, Inventories) o a flash drive (or appropriate option to store & retrieve information, i.e. Google Docs/Drive) o paper and pens (no pencils in this class) You are responsible to bring all materials to class each day (books, notebooks, pens and paper) You will be taking notes during class time and working on assigned tasks. Please pay particular attention to the schedule for all assignments, especially the essays and projects/papers. (Make sure to check the class website/Google Classroom.) Homework: Must be completed in time for class and will be checked. o All work is expected to be turned in on time. 1 day late will lose a grade. 2 days late will lose 2 grades. 3 days late will only receive ½ credit. (Absences follow school policy---see below.) Procedure for missed work: o Work collected the day you are absent is due on the day you return. (If you are in school, but miss class for an excused reason, work is still due the same day) o You have two days for each day absent to make up missed work, after which time, missed work will be considered late (see above). o A missed test must be made up 2 days after you return to school. Grading System A. Homework – 10% of grade Will be checked and given a grade. (see above) B. Class – 30% of grade (You will begin with 100 points) Classwork will be checked and given a grade. Class behavior will be observed and will also affect (positively or negatively) your grade. This includes sleeping in class, going to your locker after the bell rings, not having books and materials and class disruptions (talking, not working on class assignments or cooperatively in groups, etc.). For example, you will lose 4 points off your class grade for not working in class, 3 points for not having books and materials or for being disruptive and 2 points for each time you have to go to your locker.
