Saint Pius X Catholic School Newsletter
February 4, 2016
Dear Saint Pius X Family and Friends,
Happy Catholic Schools Week! Our school community has enjoyed celebrating this special week as we reflect on the
heritage and importance of Catholic education. Saint Pius X Catholic School has a strong tradition of preparing students
to be successful Christian leaders and stewards. We greatly appreciate our partnership with our parents and community
members who support our school.
This Sunday, our First Lego League Robotics Team 16749 will be competing in the North Carolina First Lego League
State Championship. The RoboComets were extremely successful at the NC FLL Qualifier Tournament, and we look
forward to hearing about their experience at their first state tournament. Good luck, RoboComets!
Congratulations to Hailee Rose, our 8th grade SPX Spelling Bee winner, for her success in Monday’s district spelling bee.
She made it all the way to the 4th round and placed in the top 12 contestants. Way to go, Hailee!
We hope to see you at tomorrow evening’s Family Valentine’s Dance beginning at 7:00 PM in the Connolly Athletic
Center. We are very appreciative of our PTO dance committee members who have been working hard to plan a fun-filled
event for all ages. If you have not yet purchased your tickets, they will also be sold at the door.
Finally, please be on the lookout for our 2016-2017 Reregistration Packets, which will be emailed to all parents next
week. If you need a hard copy, please contact the school office.
In Christ’s love,
Anne W. Knapke
Catholic author, Virginia Lieto, visited with kindergarten through 2 nd grade students to read and discuss her book,
Finding Patience. All of the students were excited to listen and learn about Christian virtues such as patience, charity,
hope, and love with Mrs. Lieto.

St. Jude Math-A-Thon News
Dear Parents,
Please enjoy reading the letter I received this week from one of my former students, Hailey Loftis. She had the
opportunity to visit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital last week. Below are her reflections. Also, be sure to
send in the Math-A-Thon permission slip so your child can participate in this worthy cause.
Thank you,
Lorraine Malphurs
Dear Mrs. Malphurs,
I know we haven't seen or spoken to each other in quite some time now, but I just had some exciting news
that I wanted to tell you about! This past Thursday, I had the opportunity to go to Saint Jude and the first
person I thought of when I signed up to go was you. I am a part of the Delta Delta Delta sorority here at
Wofford and one of the most important things to us is our philanthropy-- childhood cancer research. In 1999,
we partnered with Saint Jude and have been raising money for them ever since. Since I was in your class
doing the math-a-thon, I have always had a special place in my heart for Saint Jude and it has been a big
dream of mine to go and visit and I finally got the chance!
I had the most amazing visit. First of all, I could not believe how big the hospital was - "wow" is really all I
can say! Also, I knew from pictures that the hospital was different from most, but I still thought it was going to
be extremely sad going to visit. To my surprise, that hospital was one of the happiest places I have ever
been to. Most of the children were all smiling, waving, and just looked so content. Not one hallway in the
hospital looked dark or dreary like most hospitals do. It was honestly just too amazing for words to describe.
Although we did not get to speak to the children or the families (I believe there is a lot of paperwork that has
to go along with that - we were just on a tour that day), I really got a sense of how amazing Saint Jude really
is. I realize now that all of events, fundraisers, etc. that I once found time consuming and sometimes tedious,
are going to such a worthwhile cause. I have a much greater appreciation of my sorority and for you for
getting me interested in such a beautiful place.
I am so sorry for the long email, but I just wanted to let you know how my experience went, and to thank you
for being the first person to get me interested in Saint Jude. I have attached some pictures that I thought you
might enjoy looking at (I wasn't sure if you had ever been to visit-- if so, I would love to talk with you about
it!).
Love from a former second grade student,
Hailey Loftis

Living the Jubilee Year of
Mercy at SPX
Growing in Works of Mercy
During the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis is
encouraging all to engage in acts of Mercy
large and small as a way to experience the
limitless mercy offered to each of us through
Jesus.
Here at Saint Pius X School many acts of mercy
occur each and every day. As a way to be united
in efforts to give and receive mercy, we will be
recording and collecting works of mercy
offered this year near the office. All are invited
to write any work of mercy offered or received
on a strip of colored paper and place it
anonymously in the container.
Let’s see how many Containers we can fill as a
community!
Make it a Lenten practice as a family to set a goal
for each week.
Let’s Keep it going all year!
All women are invited to attend
Mass: Thursday February 25, 7PM in
the SPX Chapel
Please note date correction
All are invited to attend mass with students on Tuesdays at 8:30 AM and to pray the rosary after mass in
the chapel.
Please forward any specific prayer intentions to the office or Mrs. Malphurs.
