Latino College Expo Workshops 2013 1. Living Out the College Experience Come participate in this informative workshop with the brothers of La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc. all about the College Experience from the perspective of current New York University Student Leaders. Attendees will learn about the commitments, opportunities and benefits of college life. Topics will include academic demands, extracurricular activities/student leadership, social life, and some other unique aspects college life has to offer. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions in a casual setting and get to know individual NYU students and their respective fields of study. 2. Lights, Camera, Action & Oral Presentation This workshop will be led by a panel of professional artists, actors, musicians, producers, and college admissions personnel that cover a diverse range of ethnic themes and presentation formats and a wealth of experience in developing new artists and an astute appreciation of diversity in the arts. This workshop will provide you with the training, insight and knowledge needed in preparing for the audition that will allow you stand out. It will inform you on how to look at the craft from the artistic and professional perspective. It will also increase your skills and knowledge in the area of public speaking and how to alleviate anxieties that create a wall between expressing and delivering your ideas and message in front of an audience. 3. Gaining Admission and Affording College through “Free Money” Applying to college can be intimidating, confusing and expensive. This workshop will address the essentials of applying to college from crafting competitive applications to completing financial aid paperwork. Participants will also learn how to research and access funds to pay for college. There are millions of dollars that go unclaimed by prospective students and this workshop will provide you with websites, organizations and strategies to apply and obtain these “free monies” that will make college affordable and more attainable. 4. “SAT – Prep and Beyond” This workshop will have various SAT Prep Organizations that provide high-quality consulting services, test preparation programs, and self-study resources to students nation-wide. Their collective mission is to provide affordable, accessible and adaptable programs/services to help students reach the next level in education. Leveraging many years of experience in test preparation and educational services, these organizations have designed programs specifically focused on helping individuals achieve their academic goals and overcome some of the biasrelated materials, which affect performance. This workshop will give you the techniques and strategies to reach those goals through the improvement of your test scores. 5. Life after High School Have you ever asked yourself, what happens after high school? Well, you will have an opportunity to ask alumni from several programs and schools the same question. Alumni return to share their personal journeys since graduating from high school. What colleges they attended? What career path did they choose? How do they stay connected to their programs and high schools as Alumni? Find out in this panel discussion. 6. Student Athletes – “Are Your Ready” The guidelines for student athletes (boys & girls) are very specific and vary as they apply to Division 1, 2, and 3 sports. Your performance, both academically and athletically, will impact scholarship eligibility and interest from coaches. Hearing the facts from a panel of coaches, student athletes, and athletic directors, this workshop will get you in “tip top shape” to tackle the application and recruitment process. 7. Utilizing Social Media for Social Change Social media use has become so pervasive in our lives that having a presence on a social network site is synonymous with being online. When given the opportunity & resources, you can design your own social media campaigns based on a collective and creative vision on social justice issues that impact your peers and community thereby becoming 21st century agents of change. Come learn how you can utilize social media for networking purposes but also effect change in projects that matter to you. 8. “Developing Next Generation’s Leaders Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, CHCI’s mission is to develop the next generation of Latino leaders by promoting higher education, providing unmatched career development experience, and award-winning leadership development curriculum. In 1987, CHCI created its Education Center to meet the needs of Latino youth, parents and educators looking for resources to assist Latino students through the educational process. Twenty-three years later, they continue to provide the most up-to-date information so students have all the resources they need to finish high school, go to college, and begin successful careers on their way to becoming the next generation of Latino leaders. This workshop aims to address the critical need for higher education and improved graduation rates among the country’s fastest growing and youngest demographic – Latinos. (All students welcomed). 9. This session covers not only the vital websites to use but also includes many tips about how to make yourself stand out and learn as much as possible about the schools you’re interested in. This session includes a detailed discussion about how to use popular sites like Twitter and Facebook, whole also discussing the ways in which misuse of these sites and other activity on the internet can lead to students missing out on the school of your choice. ************************************************************* “Becoming a Partner in the College Process” (PARENTS ONLY - NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED) This “parents only” workshop will consist of a panel of guidance counselors, parents, and college admissions officers in hopes of educating parents on the minute details of the college application and selection process. You will leave prepared to enjoy the Expo, equipped with the knowledge necessary to better support your child by becoming equal partners with them during this daunting yet exciting time in their lives.
