María Elena Girone

and
Carmen Ortiz Hendricks

University
invite you to join them in a process of
Deshaciendo el Racismo (Undoing RacismTM)
Exploring the unique opportunities of the Latino community to
address inequity in the United States.
The Puerto Rican Family Institute, Inc.
(145 West 15th Street, 7th floor)
Friday, June 1st
9:00 AM to 12:00 PM
The morning will be facilitated by The People’s Institute for Survival and
Beyond (PISAB), a multi-racial, multi-cultural organization which bases its work
on anti-racist principles. For the past four years, the NYC Chapter of NASW,
along with the City’s schools of social work, have organized to send over 1500
social workers and human service workers, including many CEOs, to the 2 ½-day
training offered by PISAB called the Undoing RacismTM Community
Organizing Workshop.
During this special session, you will be given a taste of the analysis developed by
PISAB. Seasoned trainers and organizers will provide a historical framework for
the current social, political and economic context of the United States. Special
attention will be given to exploring questions and issues that are particular to
the Latino community such as:
 Why is there such a shortage of Latinos in social work and human
services?
 Why is the incidence of mental illness among the Latino population
higher than for other groups?
 What happens to the collective strength of the community when the
U.S. Census separates Latinos by race?
 Who benefits economically, socially and politically when the Latino
community is fragmented?
 What is the difference between prejudice, discrimination and
racism?
 How can the Latino community build strategic alliances with other
communities that experience similar challenges?
