Aristotle (前384—前322年)
One of the greatest thinkers of all time,
an ancient Greek philosopher. His work in
the natural and social sciences greatly
influenced virtually every area of modern thinking.
Aristotle threw himself wholeheartedly into Plato’s
pursuit of truth and goodness. Plato was soon calling
him the “mind of the school”. In later years he
renounced some of Plato’s theories and went far
beyond him in breadth of knowledge.
Hong Dan
In the early Middle Ages the only works of his known in
Western Europe were parts of his writings on logic. They
became the basis of one of the three subjects of the
medieval trivium (三学科)—logic, grammar, and rhetoric.
Early in the 13th century other books reached the West.
Some came from Constantinople; others were brought by
the Arabs to Spain. Medieval scholars translated them
into Latin.
Hong Dan
The best known of Aristotle’s writings that have been
preserved are Organon (工具论) (treatises on logic),
Rhetoric, Poetics, History of Animals, Metaphysics (玄
学), De Anima (on psychology), Nicomachean Ethics,
Politics and Constitution of Athens.

THE PURPOSE OF EDUCATION
By Martin L. King Jr.
... It seems to me that education has a two-fold
function to perform in the life of man and in society:
utility and the other is culture
the one is _____
______.
Education must enable a man to become more
_______,
efficient to achieve with increasing facility the
legitimate goals of his life.
Education must also train one for quick, resolute
and effective
_______ thinking. To think incisively and to
think for one’s self is very difficult. We are prone to
let our mental life become invaded by legions of
half-truths, prejudices, and propaganda. At this
point, I often wonder whether or not education is
_______
fulfilling its purpose.
Hong Dan
A great majority of the so-called educated people does
not think _______
logically and scientifically. Even the press,
the classroom, the platform, and the pulpit in many
instances do not give us objective and unbiased truths.
propaganda in my
To save man from the morass of __________,
opinion, is one of the chief aims of education.
weigh
Education must enable one to sift and ______
evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real
from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction.
Hong Dan
The function of education, therefore, is to teach
one to think intensively
_________ and to think critically
_______.
But education which stops with efficiency may
prove the greatest menace to society. The most
dangerous criminal may be the man gifted with
reason, but with no morals.
Hong Dan
Ⅲ. Oral Work
Group discussion
How do you view the fact that some people can
also succeed without much higher education? Do
you think there is a big difference between an
educated success and an uneducated success?
