Years 10 and 11 Information Evening Wednesday 3rd September 2014 Our aims for tonight • To introduce you to the KS4 team • To raise awareness of important dates for KS4 students this year • To examine the KS4 curriculum and the improvements put in place this year • To share the plans for pastoral care over the next academic year • To discuss and allow you to explore our new Assessment Recording and Reporting initiative Key Stage 4 • A 2 year programme of study focused around the (International) General Certificate of Education or (I)GCSE • Students study a mix of compulsory and chosen options subjects • At the end of the course they get awarded a grade between A* and U (the grades available vary depending on the particular course) • But it is about more than just grades Pastoral Care The Key Stage 4 Team The Key Stage 4 Team - Leadership Catherine Johnson Michael Guinness The Key Stage 4 Team – Year 10 Matthew Bowen David Cliff Laura Fenton Ia Adam-Lim Julie-Ann Caringal Lewis Keens The Key Stage 4 Team – Year 11 Edwin Owen Adam Kennedy Paula Wingate Andraya Holmes The Key Stage 4 Team – Year 11 Robyn Kyne Mary Diamante Assertive Mentoring • Focused on students struggling with the pressure of (I)GCSE. • Student is assigned a mentor • Track and monitoring of progress using agreed and shared targets • A learning diary is also completed to help the student monitor their progress Student Counselling Roderick Peñalosa Anne-Margaret Thompson Arlene Campbell Stress Management • Workshop on Wednesday 8th October. • All parents of students in Years 10-13 are encouraged to attend. • PSHE for Year 11 before mock exams will follow a stress management programme too looking at: – – – – Time management Meditation Healthy active lifestyles Diet, Sleep and Stress The Key Stage 4 Curriculum Compulsory Subjects • English Language • English Literature • Biology • Chemistry • Physics Completed either as 3 subjects (three (I)GCSE grades) or as a combined Double Science Award (two (I)GCSE grades) • Mathematics • A Modern Foreign Language (Spanish, French or Mandarin) Options Subjects • • • • • • • • Geography History Business Studies Economics Psychology Music Drama Art • P.E. • Communications and Information Technology • (Religious Education – Yr11) The BSM Sport’s Leaders Award • This is a BSM created qualification designed to help students develop leadership and team working skills through sport. What’s new? • The Project (Year 10) • Theory of Knowledge (Year 11) The Project • Excellent preparation for the EE at IB • Students pick their own personal question to look at – it has to have a narrow focus with an element of controversy • Encourages deep learning and independent learning and research skills • Gains student a ½ GCSE (A*-C) Some project titles… Theory of Knowledge (ToK) • Aimed at preparing students for ToK at IB • Asks students to think about ‘How do we know what we know?’ • This is explored through attempting to answer interesting questions like ‘How accurate is my map of the world?’ • This is a BSM designed course. Preparing for IB (important dates) • Students in Year 11 are using tutor/PSHE time to explore careers and IB • Individual interviews with students started on Monday 1st September • 11th September – IB choices assembly for Year 11 • 15th-26th September – IB subject lunchtime seminars. • 3rd October – IB options survey 1 • 24th October – IB options survey 2 • 14th November – IB options survey 3 What comes next? International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme • • • • • • Six subjects Three HL, three SL ToK, EE, CAS Courses 45 points Careers advice and individual research Assessment at BSM • Up to Year 9, National Curriculum levels are used • For (I)GCSE qualifications, grades A*, A, B, C, D, E, F, G are considered a pass • At IB, a level 7 is the highest possible mark • Our assessment models mirror those used by external bodies (CEM, examination boards…) What’s changing, and what isn’t • Previously, we have averaged out the levels and published them 4 times per year • This year, we will be giving more information on more tasks and assessments • Comments and targets • Access through View Marks on SchoolBase • Working to improve the view • Our assessment procedures are secure and robust.
