Where your mind, body and heart can soar
August 11, 2014
Dear Horning Families,
I hope you’re enjoying the warm summer weather; that Polar Vortex seems like a distant memory now. After a kind of
rainy and cool beginning, it’s nice to see summer is in full swing. I’m not sure where the time has gone but August is
upon us and it’s time for us to think about getting ready for the start of school. It just seems the summers keep getting
shorter and shorter. Seeing the back to school advertisements for clothing and supplies in the stores is a sure sign that
the new school year is not too far away.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new 6th graders as you start a new chapter in your educational careers.
I’m sure the anxiousness hasn’t hit yet but as we get closer to the start of school it might. That’s okay because our 7th
and 8th graders felt the same way when they first arrived. Believe me when I say this, that feeling will slowly go away
with each passing day.
To our 7th and 8th graders we look forward to your return and the positive leadership you will provide to our new
students. I challenge you to be the positive force of Horning which in turn will lead to a great year. You are the role
models for the younger students.
Please take the time to read over the online newsletter. It is packed with a lot of information which will help keep
everyone in the know. Have a great rest of your summer. We will see you at orientation, forms and fees days in the
next few weeks.
Go Hawks!

¡Vamos Halcones!

LOCKS AND LOCKERS
All students are required to have two combination locks,
one for hall lockers and one for their Phy. Ed. locker. For
security purposes, ALL LOCKS MUST BE PURCHASED FROM
HORNING, as we are able to gain access to lockers if
needed using a master key. At any time during the year, if a
student needs to purchase a new lock, they should see
Mrs. O’Donnell in the Principal’s Office. Students are not
allowed to share lockers, so please encourage your child
NOT to give his/her locker combination to anyone.
Students’ lockers will be listed on their schedules. After
turning in forms, paying fees and having your child’s photo
taken, feel free to go to their lockers and set them up.
Shelves need to be free standing. Be sure to secure the
lock!
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Every student will be required to wear a uniform for Phy. Ed.
class. If for some reason a student forgets their uniform
there will be extras available. A medical excuse is
necessary for students who are not able to participate in
physical education. Phy. Ed. classes contain some vigorous
activities. If a medical excuse is not furnished, we assume
the student is physically fit and able to participate. Seventh
and 8th graders can use their uniform from last year, but
Parents: PLEASE CALL THE SCHOOL WHEN YOUR CHILD IS
ABSENT! You (the parent or guardian) must call before 8:00
a.m. each day the student is absent. For your convenience,
we have a voicemail system whereby you can leave a
message 24 hours a day. OUR ATTENDANCE LINE
BUILDING SECURITY
Horning continues to work to be as safe as possible.
Security cameras and buzz-in door systems were installed
at our two Butler Drive entrances. Our building is locked
down during the school day, including the doors at the Wolf
Road turn-around. You will not be able to request access at
those doors. If you need to pick up your child anytime
during the school day, please come to the Attendance
Office Butler Drive entrance. Please do not be offended if
you are questioned about your reason for coming to school
by our office personnel. They have been asked to screen all
visitors seeking entrance into our building. Thank you for
your understanding and cooperation.
CONTACTING STUDENTS DURING THE DAY
In order to minimize classroom disruptions, please keep
messages to a minimum UNLESS it is an EXTREME
EMERGENCY. We ask for your full cooperation in this
matter. Please make all arrangements for rides, after
school activities and instructions, etc. before the school day
begins.
Due to the three different schedules that Horning will be
following, we will not be able to deliver items that are
brought in for students. Please encourage your child to be
responsible in bringing his/her own supplies, lunches,
homework, etc. to school. We are encouraging parents to
put money on their child’s lunch account in case they
should forget to bring their lunch from home.
TRANSPORTATION
If your student rides the bus, you will receive all the
necessary information in a special letter from the bus
company the week before school starts, which will include
route descriptions and pick-up points. Parents are
responsible to see that their child rides only their assigned
bus!
Misbehavior on the bus can result in tragic accidents.
Therefore, students who do misbehave will lose their bus
privileges. The bus driver must have complete cooperation
from all students. Please discuss this important need with
your children. If you have any questions regarding bus
transportation, please direct them to the Assistant
Principal’s office at 970-3317.
NO CELL PHONES, iPODS or SKATEBOARDS
Due to the possibilities of theft and inappropriate use in
school, cell phones and iPods must be shut off and stored
in your street locker upon arriving to school. Skateboards
ARE NOT allowed at school.
STUDENT DRESS CODE
Horning Middle School recognizes that students desire to
exert their independence. Therefore, they are given multiple
opportunities to demonstrate their individuality. We model
and encourage respect among all students and celebrate
diversity. While we acknowledge a student’s desire to
“belong”, we are also trying to maintain an educational
environment where learning is our #1 priority. Please make
sure that your child leaves home in school-appropriate
attire, which is outlined below with reference to Board
Policy #5132:
For Boys:
 No visible boxers/undergarments
 No loose/low-riding/sagging pants
 No muscle shirts or tank tops
For Girls:
 Fingertip rule applies to shorts and skirts
 No strapless or halter tops
 Tank top straps must be at least 2 inches wide
 No bare midriffs
 No visible bra straps or undergarments

sexual innuendo, or the promotion of illegal products
 No questionable holes in shorts or pants (small holes
must be below the fingertip line)
School Administration will be the final say as to any
questionable items of clothing meeting the dress code. It is
our responsibility to provide a meaningful and wholesome
learning environment for all of our students. If a student
violates the above dress code regulations, we will ask the
student to change into appropriate attire or their gym
uniform. We appreciate your assistance in addressing this
highly sensitive issue.
DETENTION
Inappropriate behavior may result in detentions. As part of
the overall discipline procedure, teachers may issue
detentions to students with severe recurring inappropriate
actions. We will give consideration to those who ride buses
to school by giving a 24-hour notice to arrange for
transportation.

assistant principal’s office by September 19th.
WHO LET THE DOGS IN????
During the course of the school year the Waukesha County
Sheriff’s Department, in conjunction with the Waukesha
Police Department, may request to use Horning as a
training facility for their drug detecting dogs. We fully intend
to participate and cooperate with them for the general
health, safety & welfare of all our students. If you have any
questions please contact the Principal’s Office.
GRADING PROGRAM
At the middle school levels, the following marking system
will be used throughout the academic year to communicate
student achievement:
4
Advanced:
Students
independently
demonstrate
sophisticated application in new contents. Earning a 4 means
the students has advanced knowledge and skill that are
applied to other situations and new learning. A score of 4 is
earned when students produce truly exemplary work that
demonstrates knowledge and skills that exceed district grade
level expectations. It should not be confused with an A in a
traditional grading system.
3
2
Proficient Knowledge: Students demonstrate and apply skills
consistently. Earning a 3 means the student has a proficient
understanding of grade level content and meets district
expectations,
demonstrating
their
understanding
independently and consistently. They are right on track with
our high academic expectations. A 3 represents a student
meeting grade level expectations and indicates high quality
work. It is our goal for each student to reach proficiency.
Basic
Knowledge:
Students demonstrate skills
inconsistently. Earning a 2 means the student has a basic
understanding and partially meets district expectations. A
student receiving a 2 inconsistently demonstrates
understanding and requires assistance. They have a basic
understanding of concepts or skills, but have not yet reached
consistent proficiently.
1
Minimal Knowledge: Students demonstrate limited skills and
require significant teacher assistance. Earning a 1 means the
student has a minimal understanding of concepts and skills
and does not meet district expectations.
0
Insufficient Evidence of Learning to Provide Feedback.
Earning 0 means the student has not demonstrated
understanding of concepts and skills to meet district
expectations.
