After a spell of associateships in London, he bought a practice in London SW16 in 1979. During the early years, as he could not find any general practice qualifications in the UK, he went to the USA and obtained a New York state licence! On his return to the UK, when the MGDS became available, he was among the second cohort to qualify (he had to wait till his eighth year post graduation!) He has since obtained several other PG qualifications whilst maintaining a practice. Over the years, he has he has been active on FGDP Board, British Society for General Practice, VT Programme Director and several examiner posts, where he was born, to name but a few. He is also active in a disabled charity project in Musoma, Tananzia. He still finds time for his Specialist, six surgery practice in SW16. He was awarded the MBE in 2002 for services in Post Graduate Education. He has also received the BSGDS award for “exceptional contribution to dentistry” He was exceedingly honoured to be proposed by the members of his Section to become President of the Southern Counties Branch. The retiring President, Dr Christine Osborne thanked the Branch for electing her as President and said she had greatly enjoyed her year in office following a successful Presidential meeting in Guildford. She had managed to visit all of the Sections during her year and was pleased to report the apparent health of the Branch at Section level. The new President Dr Manny Vasant MBE was then inaugurated and presented with the Presidents Jewel. He presented Dr Christine Osborne with her Past Presidents badge. The President then took the chair for the Annual General Meeting. The Branch Council Meeting was held prior to this, preceded by the Section Secretaries, Treasurers and Benevolent Fund Representatives meeting. Presidential Meeting The Postgraduate Days were held at G C. Europe Institute, Leuven on 24th and 25th April. The President, Dr Manny Vasant, opened the programme “The Journey of a Tooth – Exploring the Restorative Cycle” introducing Richard Porter’s lecture followed by a free evening exploring the excellent restaurants in Leuven. The morning session of keynote lectures were well received and the day continued with lectures and hands on sessions from Jansie Van Rensburg, Dr Simone Moretto and Karin De Hert. Responses from all delegates were enthusiastic and positive asking for more of the same in future. Throughout the day an excellent trade exhibition entertained through refreshment breaks with many delegates visiting all trade stands. The Branch is as ever grateful for the generous support of the dental trade. In the evening the Presidential Dinner was hosted by Dr Manny Vasant (his speech which was inspirational and important in its relevance is reproduced below) at the Begijnhoff Congress Hotel and Faculty Club, Leuven. The meal was accompanied by a highly successful raffle for the Benevolent Fund. 2 An accompanying persons’ programme was enjoyed by many who toured Leuven on foot and then Brussels by coach and on foot enjoying lunch at the Museum of Music. Allan Speech by Manny Vasant to Southern Counties Branch Presidential Meeting 2015 President of the BDA- our Chief Guest, colleagues, friends, ladies and gentleman It is a great honour for me to assume the role of the President of the BDA Southern Counties. There is no doubt that this is going to be a challenge for me to emulate my predecessors who have done a splendid job to steer this association along this dynamic road. Let me thank those who shaped this particular event, which I hope sets the scene for the rest of the year. First and foremost, Chris Brown and Louise Pakes, along with the rest of the GC staff. Unfortunately, Louise was not able to join us on this trip. Louise has worked relentlessly throughout the last year. A big round of applause for Louise in her absence please. A bouquet of flowers is on the way to her! The smooth flow that we saw today is not an accident! Lisbet and her colleagues have worked very hard at this end to make this happen. Thanks to the team. Dental Directory have been very generous in their contribution for this event. A big thank you to Mike Volk and Martin Mills and the new owners IDH along with the reps Zara and Glen. And I also acknowledge other sponsors who are sitting on the far side of the room. Thank you! Thanks to all the speakers who have given their valuable time and personal time to be with us. The Porters moved their son’s birthday party to Leuven and Joneses had to juggle their way through kid’s examinations. Thanks to Jansie, Karin and Simone for your lovely presentations. 12 My organizing committee have worked relentlessly through the last year to make this happen. They know who they are. However, I have to give a special mention to Hemini, Naresh and Sushil who have given up valuable UDA time during March for the reconnaissance visit to Leuven and for other matters. I would also like to thank Martin Miller and John Strevens for their guidance in the run up to this event. I must also thank the hotel and the Faculty Club for a splendid job that they have done tonight- so far at least! Last but not the least, thanks to all of you for participating in this event. As many of you will know, I fell into a profession that I have adored and continue to adore. During my involvements in varied offices, I have never been shy to speak my mind. So why should I stay quiet now that I have a mike in my hand! Someone said “Prediction is a risky business especially when it about the future” And by golly, those in charge in 2006 for dentistry got it awfully wrong -didn’t they? I have vivid recollections about trying to make some of the then “architects” understand what was actually happening at the grass roots but “no chance”. It was clear that they were acting in a stealthy way and that there was a hidden agenda. They were fixing the system to get some preconceived statistics. It was obvious that they had ulterior motives rather than the interest of the profession or the patients at heart. In their act of stupidity, they have empowered the corporate sector by allowing them “procurements” – effectively “free goodwill”, they have reduced our younger colleagues have to prostitute their services to them. God help us from this tyranny! My only hope is that the new civil servant will be picked from someone who has earned his/her PG qualifications and someone who has a track record of delivering decent dentistry. We hope he/she will steer things differently. We can only live in hope! And then there are others in the post graduate world who seem to be determined to destroy the legacy of the NHS which was the way in which free post graduate education was delivered in a convivial environment to anyone who wanted it. This was a prized possession of the British GDPs and the envy of the dental world outside the UK. This has now been taken away. Instead they seem to have invented complicated the booking systems which seems to enrich commercial companies who run them. Sadly this killed post-graduate education as we knew it. The “after work” courses not only delivered some new concepts and ideas but also served as useful peer review and therapy for all dentists and brought them together. My personal ambition therefore has to be to try and reverse this trend through the BDA at the local level to look after the afflicted young dentists have been deprived of this privilege. We shall try and re-invent these evening sessions under the aegis of the BDA. I therefore urge all of you here to maintain the membership of the BDA and to support your local groups. If recent events are to go by, we need a strong and vibrant BDA. We need to stand united. Thanks you once again. 13 Grace: We thank Almighty God for the sumptuous supper that has been laid before us. We thank you Lord for the teeth that we have to be able to enjoy this food. We thank Thou even more for giving us the skills to fix teeth for those who have none! We also thank our teachers of today for enhancing our skills so we may continue to help others to enjoy their food! Amen. 14
