One Child Policy







1970 the birthrate was 4.77 children per woman
2011 the average woman had 1.64 children
Estimated that it is now the world's most unbalanced sex ratio
at birth with boys outnumbering girls.
Estimated that 336 million abortions and 222 million
sterilizations have taken place, often against the mothers will,
and these have all been since the one child policy was
introduced in 1978
Policy applies to urban couples, restricting them to only one
child
However in rural areas or places of high wealth, many couples
have more than one child. There also is a fairly recent change
to the policy which says that if both parents were only
children, and you are a rural citizen you may apply
New policy also says if first child is a girl, then they can also
apply
