8.L.5 Review Reteach Reinforce Teacher Resources NCES.8.L.5: Understand the composition of various substances as it relates to their ability to serve as a source of energy and building materials for growth and repair of organisms. 8.L.5.1 - Summarize how food provides the energy and the molecules required for building materials, growth and survival of all organisms (to include plants). 8.L.5.2 - Explain the relationship among a healthy diet, exercise, and the general health of the body (emphasis on the relationship between respiration and digestion). What Students Have to Know by Grade 8: To stay in good operating condition, the human body requires a variety of foods and experiences. The amount of food energy (calories) a person requires varies with body size, age, sex, activity level, and metabolic rate. Students should know that all organisms need energy to grow, survive, and reproduce. Students should know that producers are organisms that can make food by using energy from the sun, and consumers are organisms that must consume other organisms for energy. Students should be familiar with some of the relationships that exist within habitats and ecosystems. Misconception Energy flow stops with the last predator in a food chain. Reality Energy transfer continues beyond the last predator to include decomposers, which break down dead organisms at all levels of the food web. Misconception Choices we make as teenagers do not have lasting effects on our heath. Reality The choices we make today can have a lasting influence. Not wearing sunscreen can cause skin cancer. Smoking as a teenager can lead to cancer, stroke, heart disease, and an early painful death. Misconception The skin is not a body system. Reality The integumentary system has many functions and works with several other systems. Skin protects and waterproofs the body, shields internal organs, helps regulate temperature, and protects the body from injuries and microbial infections. Question 60 C. Why is protein an important part of a healthy diet? A It is needed to change glucose to energy. B It is needed to store nutrients. C It is needed to repair tissue. D It is needed to produce water. Answer Choice A B Most common error C Correct D No Response « Correct answer District 22.22% (270/1215) 39.34% (478/1215) 32.02% (389/1215) 4.44% (54/1215) 1.98% (24/1215) Your Students HAVE TO KNOW: If you don’t exactly understand this, call me and I will walk you through it!!! Cycles NEVER STOP. Matter can be recycled but energy is lost as heat Plants make glucose sugars in their chloroplast with light energy from the sun. C. Rudolph Page 2 of 3 8.L.5 Review Reteach Reinforce Teacher Resources Glucose is made up of atoms of C, H, & O & is considered to be matter. The matter, we call glucose, stores chemical energy in the bonds linking the C, H, & O atoms together. The process of digesting foods like carbohydrates allows our body to convert the chemical energy stored in the chemical bonds of glucose into a more usable form of energy called ATP through the process of respiration. Respiration makes ATP energy by taking the oxygen we breathe in and combining it with glucose at the mitochondria in our cells. Our cells then give off carbon dioxide & water. Our body recycles the matter by using the C, H, & O atoms to assist in other body functions like making new cells, transporting molecules, excretion, etc. The chemical energy we burn from ATP is converted into heat energy that moves into the environment.
