All states except Tasmania have a tertiary admissions centre like QTAC. All of the applications are online. New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) www.uac.edu.au - the website will be updated on 8 August for 2013 applications – ‘on time’ application due date is 28 September 2012 Victoria Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) www.vtac.edu.au - 2013 course applications are now open – ‘timely’ application due date is 28 September 2012 Tasmania Apply directly to the University of Tasmania www.utas.edu.au - 2013 course applications are now open – ‘on time’ application due date is 28 September 2012 South Australia and Northern Territory South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre (SATAC) www.satac.edu.au - 2013 course applications are now open - the early application due date for 2013 is 28 September 2012 Western Australia Tertiary Institutions Service Centre (TISC) www.tisc.edu.au - 2013 applications will open on 13 August 2012 - due date is 28 September 2012 Interstate course information (entry requirements, previous cut-offs, course majors, etc.) can be accessed from the websites of the tertiary admissions centres listed above and the websites of the specific institutions. It can also be obtained from ‘guides’ (like the QTAC Guide) published by the tertiary admissions centres. Some of the interstate guides can be purchased in Queensland from selected newsagents (mainly in Brisbane) and the QTAC office. You can also purchase them from interstate admissions centres. The following websites are helpful for finding information about interstate courses and financial support. My University www.myuniversity.gov.au - this site has a course and institution search function Study Assist http://studyassist.gov.au - this site has information on financial assistance 5 The websites of the interstate admissions centres provide information about how interstate students can apply. For many of the centres you can use your Queensland LUI to start the application. The sites normally have a table comparing OPs with ATARs (the tertiary entry score for all states except Queensland). If you have problems with the application contact the centre by phone or email. In addition to information about courses and the application process, you should also research: accommodation options, including application processes and due dates cost of living, including transport university support services available to students what scholarships and other financial support is available. If you get an offer from QTAC and from interstate, you then have to decide which offer to accept. If you have done your research well, this should not be too difficult a task. Update on changes to UQ’s MBBS Program 2015 UQ is proposing to introduce a new master’s level Doctor of Medicine program (MD), to replace the current Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program from 2015. The MD program will require completion of a minimum three year bachelor degree for entry before students can commence the four year MD. As such no new enrolments into the current six year dual degrees with the MBBS will be possible from 2013 onwards due to the lead times involved. Students wishing to gain provisional entry into Medicine will still be required to sit UMAT. Subject to final approval, the MD will be introduced in 2015. Students should be aware that while the MD program is likely to have no specific prerequisites for entry there will be a strong recommendation that students take some biomedical science courses in their first degree. Students are urged to consider a choice of first UQ degree that is likely to cover ‘pre-medical’ material that will assist with their MD studies. Refer to the MD FAQ webpage at www.som.uq.edu.au/about/organisation/doctor-ofmedicine-degree-(md)-at-uq.aspx or phone 3346 4780 or email uqmd@uq.edu.au for further information. 7 TASTE – an opportunity to explore agricultural careers TASTE is a program for Year 10, 11 and 12 students held at two campuses (Emerald and Longreach) of the Australian Agricultural College Corporation during the September school holidays. For further information on the program, email RSLyouth@bond.edu.au or contact Kristy Crockett on telephone 07 5595 1067 The curve of forgetting Forgetting takes place most rapidly shortly after you stop studying a subject. The greatest loss is within a few hours. The speed with which you forget gradually slows down as time goes on. This is why it is more effective to do your revision over a number of weeks, rather than the night before the exam. Plan your review of material to take place first the day after it is studied, a second time about a week after that, and finally a few weeks later. Adapted from www.uwaterloo.ca/counselling-services/curve-forgetting and How to Study by T. S. Staton. 15 Gap year program updates EA Ski and Snowboard Australian Instructor Internship Scholarship - Canada 2012/13 This scholarship provides a free place (usually US$6950) on an EA Instructor Internship.
