Overall purpose of the job
This new post within New Writing North will perform a key role within the
company. The post holder will ensure the smooth running of all of New Writing
North’s digital platforms, manage and report on audience data, and support
other staff with marketing, projects and office management. The Digital and
Data Manager will work across the organisation and with senior staff and
external stakeholders, developers, designers and project partners.

Responsibility #1 - Websites and content management










Work closely with the Marketing and Communications Manager and
other staff to undertake the content management of New Writing
North’s websites including updating content, copyediting, managing
images, sound and video
Ensure that our site content is current and remove or archive content
as necessary
Work with external designers and developers to oversee the running
and development of New Writing North’s websites and in conjunction
with other staff to lead the commissioning, delivery and launch of new
sites as and when required
Perform annual appraisals of New Writing North’s websites and online
profile and manage plans for updating and development
Manage online submissions of work and engage with project managers
to ensure the smooth running of projects
Assist with the delivery and project management of the digital elements
of the Northern Writers’ Awards and other online competitions
Update and edit New Writing North’s image content, archive and social
media
Undertake the editing and uploading of New Writing North audio and
film recordings onto our own website and to platforms such as
SoundCloud, YouTube and Vimeo
To be responsible, along with the Marketing and Communications
Manager and key Project Managers, for final sign off on all NWN
websites before launch
Advise and support staff, freelancers and volunteers with the running of
associated digital initiatives and where useful training others to perform
content management tasks
Responsibility #2 – Digital communications and marketing



Working closely with the Marketing and Communications Manager and
other staff to edit, format and produce all monthly newsletters, bulletins
and other external digital communications produced by the company
Research, update and exploit data to ensure efficient and effective
direct e-marketing campaigns/initiatives
To assist staff members with digital tasks and with software such as
Wufoo and Submit
Responsibility #3 – Data capture management and reporting






Lead the development and implementation of New Writing North’s
Customer Relationship Management system to ensure that data is
collected, updated, cleaned and managed
Manage the various user and audience data held by the company. To
include managing incoming data from partner organisations, updating
information, modifying fields of data capture and future-proofing our
provision in this area
To rigorously query, extract and report upon data from a variety of
sources
Ensure that all staff understand Data Protection rules and regulations
and that New Writing North adheres to good practice in this area
Lead responsibility for providing the Chief Executive and other Project
Managers with data for evaluation purposes when requested and to
ensure that our processes and systems are adequate for collecting the
data that we need to support both the reporting requirements of our
core funders and the delivery of our Audience Development Plan
Report quarterly on digital usage and website stats across our output in
a format that can be used by New Writing North for internal and
external reporting
Responsibility # 4: Digital planning and management








Manage the software required to implement our digital communications
and to ensure that this is kept up to date and is cost effective
Work with the Marketing and Communications Manager to ensure that
all NWN project websites adhere to our house style
Offer support to staff across the organisation on the development of
new websites or hosting of projects to ensure continuity and a high
level of security across our output
Manage company email accounts, company back-up processes and to
assist staff with day-to-day software queries and troubleshooting
In conjunction with the Senior Finance Manager to lead the
management of our data security system and policy, hosting and server
facilities, and to manage contracts for mobile phones and other
technology
In conjunction with the Senior Finance Manager to collaborate with IT
capital planning and updating
Report to the board on issues of risk in relation to New Writing North’s
digital provisions, protection and sustainability
Keep a register of domain names and ensure that registration of
domain names is up to date across all of our sites

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Salary: The salary for this post is £22,000 pro rata.
We are prepared to consider applications from people who might be
interested in undertaking this post on a freelance contract basis but regular
participation in office life would be required, so undertaking the post remotely
would not be possible.
Hours of work: The Digital and Data Manager will be expected to work three
days per week. Our office hours are 9.30am-5.30pm. Some flexibility is
possible in terms of how these hours are worked across the week.
The post will start in July 2015 and is offered for an initial fixed three-year term
with a six-month probationary period.
Annual leave: The annual leave entitlement for this post is 25 days pro-rata,
plus public holidays.
Pension: New Writing North operates a company pension scheme, which is
available to all employees after successful completion of the probationary
period. New Writing North makes a contribution equivalent of 3% of gross
earnings.
