MAJOR SHOW TRAVEL MEETINGIf you are entered and attending a Major Livestock Show,
your parent/s need to attend a travel meeting on January
10th, at 5:30 pm at the Extension Office. This will be the last
chance for Vance to make travel decisions and will allow us
to better coordinate hauling of livestock.
SHOW CATTLE MANAGEMENT TIPS
Deworm regularly rotating between types. Hoof Trimming on
a regular basis will be critical from now until show time. A
weekly bath will help skin and hair coats. You will not have
to fight dandruff as bad if you will wash, brush and blow your
calves on a regular basis, and they will be in much better
shape when it comes time to clip them. Also be sure to
check for lice. I would not be a bad idea to go ahead and
treat them with Coral or another permethrine based spray.
LAMB AND GOAT MANAGEMENT TIPS
Exercise of your lambs and goats needs to increase this
month. In general, they should be run every third day hard
and fast, although right now this depends greatly on their
maturity and amount of cover they are carrying. If you
need to borrow clippers or help in learning how to clip your
goat, call Vance.
CONSUMER JUDGING
Good consumer skills can help you get more for your money.
Consumer Decision Making gives youth the opportunity to
make wise decisions when shopping. Consumer Decision
Making is a judging contest designed to teach kids to
observe, compare and make consumer based decisions
based on facts. 4-Hers use their consumer knowledge to
rank similarly based products to fit a given scenario. Kids
learn to organize their thoughts and to defend their decisions
in oral reasons.
Study materials are available on line to prepare for the contests:
http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/projects/consumer/consumer_dec
ision_making.php
Competition classes will come from the following study guide:
http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/library/files/projects_consumer_d
ecision_making_additional_resources_11_12.pdf
Those interested in competing need to call the extension
office to get registered by JANUARY 12 so we can determine
if we need a county contest to see who gets to compete at
district. Four members in each age category will be able to
go to district.
District Consumer Judging contest is on February 24 in San
Angelo. Every Thursday starting on January 5, I will set up a
class for members to come in and practice judging. It will be
a come and go but just let us know what time you will be
here.
