The accumulation of cost data with detailed coverage of materials, labor and factory overhead, job order and process costing, budgeting and standard costs. Per Instructor: The course provides an introduction to cost accounting, a field of business that develops the financial and non-financial information necessary to effectively manage the firm or organization. Cost accounting is a field in transition, moving from a procedural focus on stewardship accounting to a strategic focus on the use of accounting to facilitate the business success of the enterprise -- for both manufacturing and service firms. Also, the concepts of cost accounting are increasingly applied to government and not-for-profit organizations; in order to help them succeed in their service missions and be responsible to the citizens and funding agencies. Performance Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: Describe the nature of cost accounting Recognize and implement the various cost concepts and techniques for planning and control in a manufacturing environment Describe the manufacturing process and the costs associated with that process Describe the different types of costs and cost concepts based upon the characteristics they possess Describe the basic features of the different cost accounting systems Identify the concepts and procedures relating to a job order cost system and a process cost system Identify the concepts and procedures involved in accounting for joint and byproducts Describe activity-based cost systems for management Identify the general concepts of standard costing regarding materials, labor, and overhead Describe absorption and variable costing systems Develop an understanding of the concepts and procedures involved in accounting for joint products and by-products Develop an understanding of the concepts and procedures relating to a standard cost system Develop an understanding of the various cost concepts and techniques for planning and control Course Materials: Fundamentals of Cost Accounting: By Lanen, Anderson, and Maher, Second Edition (McGraw-Hill Irwin, 2008). Course Policies and Procedures: Delivery Method: This course will follow a Web-based format. All class materials and resources will be available via Homework Manager and Angel. Students must use their SCF email address when they register on the HM site. Class Interaction: Students and instructor can communicate via telephone, email, and Angel various communication tools. Campus meetings with instructor can be scheduled during instructor’s office hours; an appointment must be secured. Chapter Quizzes: Available only via Homework Manager, must be completed within the specified time-period, and only one attempt is allowed. Chapter Assignments: Available only via Homework Manager, must be completed within the specified time-period, and two attempts are allowed. Midterm and Final Exams: Will be available online for a 3-hour period or at the College Testing Center during regular operating hours, for a week; only one attempt is allowed. The final exam will take place during SCF’s final exam’s week and only between Monday-Wednesday. Midterm make ups are allowed in extreme circumstances.
