Introduction to Graphic Design Presented by: Ms. Masihi What is Graphic Design? Graphic Design is communicating visually a solution to a problem through shapes, typography, meanings and ideas. Typography (appearance of words) Form (shape) Content (relevance Concept (idea) within location) Why should you care?! Whether you care about Graphic Design or not and whether you know it or not, you are affected by it ! Close your eyes and Imagine the following scenario – It’s a Saturday morning, no school to go to, you don’t want to get out of your comfortable bed. Why should you care?! Think about the bed shape, the color, the wood texture, the mattress, the pillow, the sheets, the duvet, the duvet cover. All these items were designed by someone! Alas, you get up, the first visit is the bathroom. You stretch your hand to grab the door handle that was designed by someone! Why should you care?! Think about the the toilet bowl, the shape, the seat, the cover, the color, the writing, were designed by someone! You wash you hands in a basin with faucets that were designed by someone. You use a towel to dry your face/hands that were designed by someone. Why should you care?! The next visit is the kitchen, you pick up a bowl, a spoon, the cereal box, the milk carton that were designed by someone to the last detail! Why should you care?! You are now sat by the kitchen counter and are eating your cereal. In your mind’s eye, look around you, notice the floor tiles , the refrigerator, the stove, the kettle, the microwave, the toaster, the kitchen cabinets, the handles on the cabinets. Why should you care?! Notice the lighting on the ceiling, the colors, the typography (appearance of words), the form (shape of objects), the content (meaning of objects within their location), the concepts (ideas) were all designed by someone who put a lot of thinking behind the images, the words, the shapes and the colors. If not created by Nature, it has been designed by someone! All designs aim to consciously or subconsciously affect you so that you walk it, buy it, touch it, smell it, put it on, admire it. In other words, to make the world markets go around. I ask again, Why should you care?! Therefore, Even if you decide not to be a designer of anything, you are a Graphic Design consumer who is influenced by the design of everything you consume. Learning and knowing the thinking behind each design item you purchase and use will help you make informed decisions or at least, avoid being too manipulated by them!
