Animal Farm explains: A. How humanity allows evil leaders to gain power B. What must be done to end it and prevent it Connecting Animal Farm themes to your life: We are going to look at 6 claims about humanity. These truths have allowed evil leaders to rise to power. See handout. ● Work with your shoulder partner and give an example from your life or something you’ve heard/seen in the news that proves each claim to be true. Prepare to share with the large group! Claim #1 Weak-minded or timid people often allow “smarter” people to make decisions. Animal Farm example: “Several of them would have protested if they could have found the right arguments.” Claim #2 People with power use it to their personal advantage. Animal Farm example: “This work was strictly voluntary, but any animal who absented himself from it would have his rations reduced by half.” Claim #3 Evil people usually are able to dominate good people. Animal Farm example: “Let's face it: our lives are miserable, laborious, and short.” Claim #4 People who cannot read are easily taken advantage of and are easy to control. Animal Farm example: “Surely, comrades, you don't want Jones back?” Claim #5 Speaking out against government tyranny is dangerous. Animal Farm example: “they had come to a time when no one dared speak his mind, when fierce, growling dogs roamed everywhere, and when you had to watch your comrades torn to pieces after confessing to shocking crimes.” Claim #6 Powerful dictators will stay in power until the citizens get educated and organized. Animal Farm example: “We pigs are brainworkers. The whole management and organization of this farm depend on us. Day and night we are watching over your welfare. It is for your sake that we drink the milk and eat those apples.” Large Group Discussion Question “The only thing necessary for evil to exist is for good people to do nothing.” If the 6 claims are true, then the above statement must also be true. ● What impact might this have on the citizens of any society?
